Extracts from BBC stories below:

"The Iraqi government has said it will file lawsuits in US courts against firms and people suspected of illegally profiting from a UN programme.

The UN oil-for-food programme allowed Saddam Hussein's government to sell oil in order to buy humanitarian supplies during UN sanctions from 1996-2003.

An inquiry found that 2,200 firms paid $1.8bn in bribes to Iraqi officials.

A UN-commissioned inquiry headed by former US Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker found that 2,200 companies in 66 countries had paid kickbacks to Iraqi officials to win supply contracts under the $60bn (£30bn) programme.

The Iraqi statement did not name the firms or people the legal action will target nor when and in which courts the suits will be filed.”

Corruption "could not have been nearly so pervasive if there had been more disciplined management by the UN and its agencies", he said.

More than half of the 4,500 companies - from 60 countries - involved in the oil-for-food programme paid kickbacks or surcharges to the Iraqi government, Mr Volcker reported.

The single largest bribe came from a Malaysian trading company, Mastek, which paid Iraq $10bn over a prolonged period, the report found. "

"Malaysia's Anwar taking refuge at Turkish embassy" ; says a Turkish newspaper report

Read this story from the Turkish English Language newspaper HÏ‹rriyet

Reproduced here, with my emphasis added:-

"Malaysia's de facto opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim took refuge at the Turkish embassy on Sunday due to fears he could be assassinated after fresh accusations of sodomy. (UPDATED)

The developments come at a time of heightened political tension in Malaysia after the government's worst ever election result earlier this year put pressure on Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to quit.

Anwar, who was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998 and later jailed for sodomy and corruption, has seen a revival of his fortunes since the opposition alliance's strong showing in the March election. Anwar has said the old charges were trumped up, and said the new accusations were politically motivated.

"I was transported to the embassy earlier this morning fearing that my personal safety was in danger," Anwar said in a statement.

"I have been told that my assassination has not been ruled out as a means to subvert the people's will and bring an end to the transformational changes taking place in Malaysia," he said.

Anwar says he has won enough support from ruling coalition lawmakers to form a new government by September, which has sparked fears of policy shifts and unsettled investors.

Anwar has said he would alter oil-production sharing contracts, cut fuel prices, introduce minimum wages and redistribute oil wealth to the poor.

"With grumblings within the ruling coalition, most probably Abdullah's days are numbered," said political analyst Yahya Ismail. "So the government must find ways to cripple the opposition."

The new sodomy allegations arose on Sunday when Anwar's private assistant, identified by Anwar's party as 23-year-old Saiful Bukhari Azlan, lodged a police complaint.

Federal criminal investigation Chief Bakri Zinin said the man who lodged the charges had been taken to hospital, but declined to give his name.

A statement from Anwar dismissed the charge as "complete fabrication".

About 100 of his supporters gathered outside the Turkish embassy, watched by a handful of riot police. They chanted "Reformasi", the movement's battle cry, and "down with the oppressive government".

Police have warned Anwar's supporters against holding any public protests. His sacking in 1998 brought tens of thousands onto the streets.

"If you create havoc, we will deal with you," Bakri said.

Anwar accused the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition of trying to ruin him, and his wife said she had photographic evidence showing the complainant was linked to an aide of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak.

"This is the second political conspiracy," Wan Azizah Wan Ismail told reporters. "It's a political murder against my husband."

Abdullah dismissed Anwar's claims. "Barisan Nasional has no intention of wanting to make life difficult for him or to harass him," the prime minister told reporters in the administrative capital of Putrajaya after launching an environmental project. "There is no such intention."

A spokesman for Najib declined to comment because of the ongoing investigations.

Barisan suffered its worst electoral setback in 50 years in March when it lost its two-thirds parliamentary majority and ceded five states to the opposition.

Public anger against rising prices and the ruling coalition's dismal showing in the poll have fuelled calls for a change in leadership.

The opposition alliance needs just 30 more seats to win a simple majority and form a new government. It won a record 82 seats in the 222-seat lower house of parliament in March."

Anwar’s statement from inside the Turkish Embassy

"I am issuing this statement from within the embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Kuala Lumpur.

I was transported to the embassy earlier this morning fearing that my personal safety was in danger. I thank all those who offered to assist me in this time of need and am grateful to the Turkish ambassador for extending an invitation to seek refuge within the embassy.

Since the March 8 election, numerous credible sources from within the government and military intelligence have advised me that certain agents from within Barisan Nasional leadership have initiated plots to cause harm to me or my family or my supporters.

I have been told that my assassination has not been ruled out as means to subvert the people's will and bring an end to the transformational changes taking place in Malaysia.

Notwithstanding the threats which are intended to silence my voice, I intend to make public new evidence implicating that Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan and Attorney-General A Gani Patail engaged in criminal acts of fabricating evidence in cases launched against me in 1998.

The allegations that have been made against me on Saturday are nothing more than a replay of the events which transpired in 1998 when I was sacked from the office of the deputy prime minister, jailed and beaten, and then charged and convicted by a kangaroo court for crimes which I never committed.

This charade was orchestrated by a corrupt Barisan Nasional leadership which made use of the entire apparatus of the state power including its control of the judiciary, the police force, and its grip on the mainstream media.

These actions are being repeated today to undermine the forces of reform and renewal which were unleashed in the March 2008 election.

I would like to assure my family, friends and supporters in Malaysia that I am safe and remain committed as ever before to continuing the struggle for a free and just Malaysia.

ANWAR ACCUSED of SODOMY; Tell me the same old story!

Will the police really investigate and get to the bottom of this, or will they just pander to the BN political whims and fancies?

The Prime Minister and his Barisan Nasional government must be really desperate when they have to resort to attempt to resurrected and re-run an old fabricated story.

See what Nathaniel Tan has to say HERE

CNN reported that:

"Malaysian opposition leader accused of sodomy"

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was accused late on Saturday night 28th June 2008, of sodomy, police and politicians said, sparking speculation that he might be arrested on the same charge that led to his imprisonment a decade ago.

"The police report lodged against me earlier today is a complete fabrication," Anwar, 60, said in a written statement.

He contended that the report was engineered by "interested parties" to prevent him from exposing the national police chief and the attorney general for their alleged role in having him accused of corruption and sodomy in 1998.

The dramatic developments that began to unfold a little before midnight will have a severe impact on Malaysian politics, which have been thrown into turmoil since the 8th March 2008 elections in which the governing National Front coalition returned its worst-ever result.

Sodomy, even if consensual, is punishable by 20 years in prison in Muslim-majority Malaysia.

It is believed that the aide was coerced into making the accusation.

The aide was reported missing Saturday morning, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

These are edited extracts of a BBC report.

"Police in Malaysia say they are investigating renewed sodomy allegations against the opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim."

A 23-year-old aide to Mr Anwar is said to have filed the complaint.

Mr Anwar has denied the claim, saying it is designed to block his political resurgence after success at the polls, he said they were "a complete fabrication".

The ex-Deputy PM was jailed in 1998 on sodomy and corruption charges he has said were politically motivated. The sodomy conviction was later overturned, and, although freed from jail in 2004, the corruption conviction barred him from holding any political office until 15th April 2008.

In a written statement he said: "I believe we are witnessing a repeat of the methods used against me in 1998 when false allegations were made under duress."

One of his senior aides told the BBC: "This is a photocopy of the script from 10 years ago."

A party spokesman said Mr Anwar had been moved to a foreign embassy in the capital Kuala Lumpur for his own safety.

Mr Anwar, 60, said the sodomy claim was aimed at stopping the opposition from gaining further ground.

"This is clearly a desperate attempt by the regime to arrest the movement of the Malaysian people towards freedom, democracy and justice," he said.

Here are some edited extracts of an Al Jazeera report.

"Anwar Ibrahim faces sodomy probe"

Anwar Ibrahim, the Malaysian opposition leader who once was the country's deputy prime minister, has been accused of sodomising a male aide.

Anwar's lawyer has denied the allegation and Anwar himself called it a "complete fabrication".

The opposition Keadilan party said that Saiful Bahari (? Bukhari), one of Anwar's aides, had been arrested on Saturday and "forced" to make a statement saying Anwar had sodomised him.

[See the 5th columnist Saiful Bukhari exposed on Din Merican's blog HERE]

Anwar told Al Jazeera the accusations are politically motivated.

"This is because there is growing support for the People's Alliance [group of opposition parties] among members of parliament ... the government is under threat and there is also a lot of disgruntlement among the Malaysian public against the abuse of power and economic woes," Anwar said.

"I have also made it known that I have in my possession, documents implicating the inspector-general of police and the attorney-general in misconduct, including the fabrication of evidence in the cases launched against me in 1998 and 1999.”

Anwar said those involved had allegedly tampered with evidence.

"I fear for my safety ... my friends are very concerned for my safety. I was beaten to near death when I was in detention ... but they [the authorities] have given a flimsy statement that I will not be arrested for now."

The accusation comes 10 years after Anwar was ousted from the government in a power struggle amid accusations of corruption and sodomy.

He was convicted on both charges.

The sodomy conviction was later overturned, but only after he had served six years in jail.

State Stupidity Leading to the Desertification of Malaysia

Environmental Rape in Kedah & Negeri Sembilan

Example number 1:

Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak yesterday made light of plans to log RM16 billion worth of trees for timber logs in the Ulu Muda forest reserve, an area twice the size of Singapore.

He said his friends wanted to know what the fuss was about and that he had told them former Perlis MB Shahidan Kassim had once said that Perlis did not have to pay for water as it was a gift from God.

"I am now saying timber is also God's gift and I want to make money from it. What's wrong with that?" he said.

"This is just chopping down a few trees and you want us to hold a referendum?" he asked.

Md Rawi (Kedah UMNO Youth head, who called for a referendum, was among several people including Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who had asked Azizan to reconsider the proposal.

Several non-governmental organisations, including Sahabat Alam Malaysia and the Malaysian Nature Society, have condemned Azizan's plan to log timber in the water basin.

Sahabat Alam Malaysia honorary secretary R. Meenakshi, who estimated about one million (1,000,000) trees would be chopped down, had described Azizan's claim that the proposed logging would be environmentally friendly as "nonsense and untrue".

"We have been helping the country preserve the area for clean water. If the Federal Government gives us compensation, we will preserve the forest reserve," said Kedah
State Secretary Syed Unan Mashri Syed Abdullah.

Narrow minded, ignorant, stupid, destructive and selfish are a few adjective which come to mind here!

Are gifts, from God, or from anyone else for that matter, things to be squandered, especially if they are life-giving things which provided vast benefits to us all now and will be vital to our future generations?

Azizan must be a narrow minded, greedy, ignorant and selfish fool.

Example number 2:

Negeri Sembilan

The Negeri Sembilan state government lifted its ban on the export of granite to other states in Malaysia and to foreign countries on 25th June 2008, the reason, or logic, for this was reported as “increasing local and international demand” said Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan.

Even when the ban was in force , granite was still being mined and taken out of the state and even exported to neighbouring countries, [this is surely an indication of the lack of enforcement which must be tied in with bribery and corruption?].

A higher royalty will be imposed on granite quarried from private (up by 526.32%, from RM 1.90 to RM 10.00) and state land, (up by 554%, up from RM 2.20 to RM 12.00) Mohamad Hasan was reported as saying.

"More than 75 per cent of the land in the state is filled with granite and we feel it is timely for us to lift the ban, especially since demand has increased over the years," Mohamad reportedly said.

He also said there was no such ban imposed in other states and he did not want Negri Sembilan to be left out.

"The new royalty fees will apply to granite which is being exported out of the state, whilst the old rates would continue to be applied for granite which is mined for use in the state," he said, adding that “the State Land and Mines Department was also looking for other natural minerals in the state which could be profitable”.

Another two nails in the coffin of the Malaysian, and global environment, in time to come Malaysia will probably become an arid desert unless the wanton destruction of the environment is halted.

The future generations will curse the present senseless and greedy federal and state government leaders who think only of money and power.

Conservation is the key to the future! Not the wanton destruction of the environment.

Or perhaps the covert desertification part of the grand plan to 'Arab-ise' Malaysia to make it appear more "Islamic"?

We already have many Arab-style domed mosques which are totally unsuitable for Malaysia's wet equatorial climate. Many of these mosque domes leak, and they are extremely difficult to repair!

"Giving money and power to the government is like giving car keys and whisky to teenage boys."

"When politics are used to allocate resources, the resources all end up being allocated to politics."

"Politics is the business of getting power and privilege without possessing merit. "

"A politician is anyone who asks individuals to surrender part of their liberty -- their power and privilege -- to State, Masses, Mankind, Planet Earth, or whatever. This state, those masses, that mankind, and the planet will then be run by ... politicians."

"God has no role to play in politics except to make sure politicians go where they belong. To hell."

Malaysian Deputy Premier's Wife Allegedly Linked to Murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu

Raja Petra’s Statutory Declaration, the PM Speaks!

Malaysia PM says his deputy Razak & his wife Rosmah, were not involved in Mongolian woman’s murder

This report was in the Straits Times of Singapore HERE

KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Tuesday denied that his deputy Najib Razak and the man's wife were involved in the 2006 murder of a Mongolian model.

A prominent Malaysian blogger has linked the couple to the case.

Mr Abdullah said that action would be taken against the blogger who made the allegations against Mr Najib and his wife Ms Rosmah Mansor, and who has already been charged with sedition over the issue.

'I don't believe that Najib and Rosmah are involved,' the premier told reporters.

He described blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin's actions as 'unacceptable'.

'The Attorney General has told me that an investigation will be carried out and action will be taken against him,' Mr Abdullah said.

Political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, a close associate of Mr Najib, is currently on trial for abetting the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Two police officers from the Special Action Force (UTK), whose duties included guarding Mr Abdullah and Mr Najib, were also charged with the killing.

Raja Petra, founder and editor of the popular Malaysia Today site, last week lodged a signed declaration in court linking Ms Rosmah to the case.

He has already been charged with sedition over an earlier article he wrote on his website, linking both Mr Najib and Ms Rosmah to the murder. If convicted, he faces three years in jail.

Mr Najib, who is heir apparent to Mr Abdullah, has repeatedly denied any involvement in the death of the 28-year-old Mongolian woman, whose body was blown up with explosives.

Mr Abdullah dismissed Raja Petra's allegations that the premier had seen a military intelligence report on the murder that backed the allegations.

'No, I can't remember receiving anything. He can say anything but I have not seen it,' Mr Abdullah said.

Mr Najib again rejected links to the case in May, telling parliament that they were 'lies aimed at tarnishing my name'.

'As a responsible citizen, I will say again that I have never known or even met this woman before. I pray that the court will continue to seek justice and uphold the law without any interference,' he said at the time. – AFP”

Well folks, what do you make of that?

Abdullah seems to know a lot about it and furthermore appears to be pre-judging RPK.

One could even infer that his is acting as the de facto AG, investigator, prosecutor and judge!

Abdullah has taken a strong stand on the matters contained in RPK’s SD, but will there be a full and impartial investigation, and will the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth ever see the light of day?

In the interest of justice, integrity and transparency it is hoped it will.

Too much has, and is still being swept under the carpet in Malaysia.

Two people were killed and seven others seriously injured on Tuesday, 24th June 2008, when the express bus they were passengers in crashed at kilometre 406 of the North-South Toll Highway, near Lembah Beringin, in Selangor state.

In the accident which occurred at about 1pm, when the Singapore-bound bus was believed to be driven at a high speed, causing it to skid and crash into a road divider before landing on its side in the middle of the road, it was reported to have been raining at the time.

The maximum speed permitted for buses in Malaysia [on highways] is 90 km/hour, but it is very common to see them overtaking other vehicles at speeds far exceeding the maximum speed limit for cars which is 110 km/ hour.

Two of the 18 bus passengers were killed at the scene of the incident, when they were pinned under the bus. The injured passengers were taken to the Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital.

The Selangor traffic police chief Supt Che Hussin Omar, confirmed that the fatal accident had occurred.

The driver aged 44, has, according to the police who were quoted in media reports, an outstanding arrest warrant and three traffic summonses.

What are some of the main causes of bus crashes in Malaysia?

  • Reckless and dangerous driving.
  • Inexperience and poorly trained drivers.
  • Low standard of Driving Tests.
  • Total disregard for the law.
  • Almost zero enforcement.
  • Bribery and corruption.
  • Bus operators who pay drivers commission depending upon the number of trips they complete daily.
  • Poorly maintained buses.
All of the above are easy to rectify, but the federal government seems to be totally disinterested in such trivialities!

I downloaded Firefox 3.0, but soon regretted it, there are lots and lots of bugs and assorted irritants in it, and if you are a blogger using, then Firefox 3.0 will really make you tear your hair out!

No doubt, there are some pluses, but they are far outweighed by the minuses!

If you don’t believe me, try it out for yourself.

I am a Firefox fan, but Version 3.0 sucks big time.

I have deleted it, and reverted to using IE 6 and Firefox Version 2.0 which are both absolutely fine for me.

Explosive News in a SD by RKP

Rosmah & the Rose Coloured Glasses
(photo from malaysiakini)

Malaysiakini (HERE) reported on 20th June 2008 regarding a Statutory Declaration (SD) which was made by Malaysian blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, (HERE) who has declared, via this SD signed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Wednesday that Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak's wife Rosmah, (see the photograph of her above looking through rose coloured glasses), was allegedly at the scene of the crime, together with two other individuals, when a young Mongolian lady by the name of Altantuya Shaariibuu was blown up with C4 plastic explosives on the night of 19 / 20th October 2006.

See a facsimile of the Statutory Declaration, here.

There are numerous blog posts regarding this explosive SD, but so far nothing at all in the Malaysian main stream media, which is quite normal, as they have apparently been once again gagged ('imposing self censorship') by the government!
