The Kuala Lumpur of 2020 – Truly an Unbelievable Pipe Dream

A 10 year Plan for a Greater Kuala Lumpur

Judge for yourself.

Political Pipe Dream* or Farcical Fantasy?

Read full story HERE & HERE

A 'pipe dream' is a fantastic hope, or plan, that is generally regarded as being nearly impossible to achieve, the term originated in the 19th Century, as an allusion to the dreams experienced by smokers of opium pipes.

Couldn't post this earlier,

I was laughing too much...................

I hope I am wrong, but in my humble opinion 2010 is far too near, the pipe dream will remain just that a dream!

Observation on Politicians

"There is nothing so bad that politics cannot make it worse."

"There is nothing that politicians like better than handing out benefits to be paid for by someone else."

"In politics, the truth is strictly optional and that also seems to be true in parts of the media."

"You have to have a sense of humour if you follow politics. Otherwise, the sheer fraudulence of it all will get you down."

"What is history but the story of how politicians have squandered the blood and treasure of the human race?"

"If politicians stopped meddling with things they didn’t understand, there would be a more drastic reduction in the size of government than anyone in either party advocates."

"Congressman Frank and Senator Dodd wanted the government to push financial institutions to lend to people they would not lend to otherwise, because of the risk of default. ... The idea that politicians can assess risks better than people who have spent their whole careers assessing risks should have been so obviously absurd that no one would take it seriously."

Isa Samad - tainted by his past deeds

ISA>

At least two Chinese-language dailies have been reportedly ordered not to report on Isa Samad's suspension from UMNO, after he was found guilty of buying votes during the party polls in 2004.

Isa was was suspended in June 2005 from the party for six years, guilty of several charges of political corruption, but subsequently the sentence was reduced by half to three years.

Read all about it HERE, HERE & HERE

In his personal blog, UMNO veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has made the following sobering and sensible conclusions:

Mindful of the signal sent by the voters of Permatang Pasir and all the elections since March 8, the leadership should now be especially careful in selecting our candidate for Bagan Pinang.

Beyond winning and losing political battles, the party leadership should step back and think about how their choice of candidate reflects upon the party and ultimately upon their own integrity.

Nothing says more about what we stand for and who we are than the kinds of leaders we champion.

If Umno continues to field tainted candidates, the public might justly conclude that it would be better for the the country that Umno lost.

In our now dangerously divided society, it is important not just that elections be won, but that they be won with honour and by honourable individuals; that is to say, in a way that inspires the public’s trust in our institutions and enlarges our common sense of justice.

Only then can the results of elections unite rather than divide us.

That is our larger challenge.”

Isa Samad is undoubtedly a tainted candidate, he also does not appear have credibility and therefore does not deserve to win the by-election in Bagang Pinang,.

However, should he win, he will be likely to be more of a liability than an asset to the causes of unity, transparency and the eradication of bribery, corruption and money politics in Malaysia.

As a result the people of Bagan Pinang in particular, the people of the state of Negeri Sembilan and the people Malaysia as a whole will suffer.

His tenure as MB of Negeri Sembilan was, according to many, a period of stagnation, doom and gloom for the state, development and growth was slow and selective and self-centred cronyism, bribery and corruption appeared to flourish.

MALAYSIA'S CARTOONS OF TRUTH - an example of the maxim " The Truth Hurts"?

Cartoon source Asia Observer HERE

To enjoy some excellent political cartoons which are as rare as chickens teeth in Malaysia, see CARTOONKINI from Malaysiakini click HERE

The Ghost of Altantuya

A Cartoon from Korea Times

Now, one example of how the Malaysian government is trying to stop a political cartoonist from telling his story:

From The Star Online:
Saturday 29th August 2009

"408 copies of cartoon magazine seized

KUALA LUMPUR:

The Home Ministry has seized 408 copies of a cartoon magazine and 18 printing plates from a company here for illegal publishing.

The seizure of the Bahasa Malaysia Gedung Kartun at Sepakat Efektif Sdn Bhd in Brickfields on Monday followed a tip-off, said the ministry in a statement. The printer, K. Vin Publisher, was charged with operating without a permit." — Bernama

Cover of the first issue of Gedung Kartun

Click HERE for an interesting and informative news report, about this obviously politically motivated action, from Radio Australia.

Press Statement from Cartoonist Zunar

With respect to the Home Ministry's consfiscation of materials from his newly set up cartoon magazine publishing company, Sepakat Efektif Sdn Bhd's, premises with its inaugural issue of "Gedung Kartun".

Zunar: I strongly denies Home Ministry’s allegations

1. Referring to the news article in Malaysiakini dated 29th August 2009 which quotes the Home Minstry’s Corporate Communication Unit’s Head, Jamilah Taib that Sepakat Efektif Sdn Bhd, a company that I own will be charged for publishing material without a publishing license.

According to Jamilah, Sepakat Efektif will be charged under Section 5(2) (b) of the Printing Presses and Publication Act 1984 for distribution unlicensed publications. If convicted, the penalties are not more than 3 years prison or a fine not exceeding RM20,000.00 or both. The statement by Jamilah refers to the publication of a Cartoon magazine titled ‘Gedung Kartun’.

2. For the record, before the publication of the magazine, I made an application to the Home Ministry for the Publication Permit and all requirements and conditions to obtain the permit had been fulfilled.

On the 3rd of August our Company had contacted Officers from the Home Ministry and we were informed that the permit had been approved and the hard copy of the Publication Permit would be ready for collection on the 14th of August 2009.

On the said date we went to collect the Publication Permit at the Home Ministry but were informed that the Permit was not ready.
I then requested for the Permit number so that we could begin with production work on the understanding that when the magazine would be printed and distributed in 10 days' time, the Permit would be ready.

We were given the Permit Number PP8541/08/2010(0282145) ISSN 1688-5398 by the officers on that day. I refute any allegations that Gedung Kartun is published with a false permit.
The Home Ministry has made a serious accusation that implies that I made up the Permit Number PP8541/08/2010(0282145) ISSN 1688-5398.

3. I am bemused as to why the Publication Permit for Gedung Kartun is yet to be issued and instead a raid was conducted and they now want to charge me in court. Isn’t it better for them to issue the approved permit as they had informed me and solve all matters?

4. As the approved Publication Permit can only be signed off by the Home Minister, I shall request in writing to meet with the Home Minister Dato’ Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein to get an explanation on whether he did or not approve the permit number PP8541/08/2010(0282145) ISSN 1688-5398 on or before the 14th of August 2009 for Gedung Kartun magazine, as informed by Officers of the Home Ministry.

5. I will also like to question the increasing difficulty in obtaining Publication Permits. What then is meant by the Prime Minister that the media will be freer under his Administration? Is it that under 1Malaysia, works of art and the voices of cartoonists will be under a tighter grip?

6. If drawing cartoons results with 3 years imprisonment, imagine the state of media freedom and freedom of expression in Malaysia.

7. I also urge for the draconian Printing Presses and Publication Act 1984 to be abolished.

Defend the rights of Cartoonists

A cartoon from Gedung Kartun

Press Statement -Bahasa Malaysia version:

Zunar: Saya menafikan sekeras-kerasnya tuduhan KDN

7. Saya juga mendesak supaya akta lapuk, Akta Mesin Cetak 1948 dihapuskan.

BN / UMNO's Blatant Unmitigated Bribery:

The Education Ministry is providing free school uniforms and bags to 6,142 primary, secondary and religious school students in Manek Urai.

Kelantan UMNO liaison chief Mustapa Mohamed said he was informed of the aid allocation for the students by DPM and Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin several days ago.

“This gesture by the ministry is to lighten the burden of the people here,” he told a news conference at the Manek Urai Barisan Nasional operations centre yesterday.

While 300 students received the free school uniforms and bags yesterday, Mustapa said the rest would be handed out in stages.

He had earlier presented the uniforms and bags to the pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan Manek Urai Baru on behalf of Muhyiddin.

There are 10 primary and 12 secondary schools as well as an Arabic-medium school in the town.

Muhyiddin's UMNO Blackmail Attempt Disguised or is it Blatant Unashamed Bribery again?
DPM Muhyiddin Yassin gave voters in Manek Urai a simple choice - either choose PAS or choose BN / UMNO and then get a new bridge for the Manek Urai State constituency.
Muhyiddin said:
We can build it (the bridge), insya’allah, but there is a condition."
"It is easy - all you need to do is to ‘pangkah’ (vote), but you must vote for BN."
"If not, there would not be any new bridge."
"If you want the bridge, vote BN,”
Muhyiddin Yassin said Manek Urai will become a new development area in Kelantan , but only if the Barisan Nasional (BN) wins the constituency’s by election.

"If that (development) is what they want, we are ready to help but they must also be ready to help us," he told reporters after launching the Kelantan state Teachers’ Day celebration at the Manek Urai Baru National School.

Manek Urai By Election: Candidates and Carrots

In 2009, UMNO (BN) will take on PAS in the Manek Urai by-election on 14th July 2009.

Candidates from theses two political parties filed their papers when nominations closed at 10:00 on Monday, 6th July 2009.

They were Mohd Fauzi Abdullah, [50], who is the PAS treasurer for Kuala Krai and Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat, [39] the Kuala Krai UMNO Youth chief (using a BN ticket), who will be going head to head against each other.

Meanwhile: Gifts to the children of the Manek Urai constituents in the form of 'aid assistance'!

Coincidence or Covertly Co-opting into Compliance?

You need to decide yourselves folks!

“The Education Ministry (i.e. the taxpayer) is providing free school uniforms and school bags to 6,142 primary, secondary and religious school students in the Manek Urai constituency.

The Kelantan State UMNO liaison chief Mustapa Mohamed said he had been informed of the 'aid allocation' for the students by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (and the MP for Pagoh, Johor, UMNO) some days ago.

“This gesture by the ministry is to lighten the burden of the people here,” he reportedly told a news conference at the Manek Urai BN operations centre on 5th July 2009.

Part 2 The Gates of Hell Home at Kuala Kubu Baru

Where the Ray of Hope was extinguished

The Mindful Mariner's own comments:

This so called sheltered home (it is more like a Hell Hole) belongs to and is run by the Malaysian Government, through the Department of Social Welfare which is under the control of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

Disciplinary action needs to be taken from top to bottom, at both the Ministry & the Department; in fact the honourable thing initially, would be for the Minister (Sharizat Abdul Jalil) and the DG of the Social Welfare Department (Meme Zainal Rashid) to resign forthwith.

Then all types of care homes, shelters, orphanages and other similar institutions, public and private, should thoroughly checked and independently audited. After that they should all, without exception, be required to be operated to impeccable international standards of best practice.

Subsequently the Social Welfare Department should conduct regular frequent and comprehensive inspections of all shelters, care homes and orphanages for the disadvantaged in Malaysian society.

To ensure:

1. They are all fully equipped, sanitary and are run in a professional, caring, humane way.

2. That the are staffed by sufficient numbers of qualified, able, caring and dedicated staff.

3. That all the residents receive good quality, nutritional healthy food in sufficient quantities.

4. That all residents receive regular medical examinations and adequate health care.

And many other things, about which others are better qualified than me, need to be set out in full clearly mandating what has to be done.

PS But I am not too hopeful that effective sustained action will be taken.

There will be buckets of faux tears, sympathetic [or perhaps a better word is pathetic] remarks, much empty talking, but very little or more likely no effective action, as per usual!!!!

Commented on 05 July 2009 at 20:52

Reactions:

The statements by th Malaysian Bar Council:

Bar Council constitutional law committee chairman Edmund Bon said he was shocked to learn how the residents were being treated, describing it as “cruel and degrading”.

Statement by a human rights lawyer:

Amer Hamzah, human rights lawyer called on those responsible for the care of the residents to be charged with a criminal offence should there be any evidence of physical abuse resulting from the treatment.

See the news report HERE

Lots of reaction and a flurry of what is probably an attempt at 'clearing yardarms' and 'reactive damage control' from the government and their agencies:

Civil servants from the Social Welfare Department, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, volunteers and hoards of media personnel descended upon the home on Sunday 5th July 2009, after the wicked, cruel and degrading conditions there were exposed by the Star newspaper.

Minister of Health Liow Tiong Lai, reportedly ordered his staff to check on the residents of the home in Kuala Kubu Baru, and said he was wants those who are confirmed to have mental problems, to be transferred to government hospital psychiatric wards for treatment.

1Malaysia m' Arse!!

Utusan Malaysia the best selling Malay Language daily newspaper in Malaysia, which by the way is contolled by UMNO of which Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is the head, has quoted several Malay politicians and activists as saying:

'Malays should put aside their political differences so that they can jointly resist pressure from the Chinese and Indian minorities'.

The Malays must rise and unite in facing the demands of other races that are now seen as increasingly excessive,” said a paragraph in the article.

To link to Utusan Malaysia click HERE

To see what was reported in the Singapore Straits Times click HERE

and Taiwan News HERE

Najib has been talking about a '1Malaysia policy', that seems to be just that hypocritical talk, is it yet another case of no action, talk only?

UMNO it seems will never reform, lessons apparently still haven't been learned, and the complaisant 'head in the sand' attitude remains.

Does UMNO stand for: Unrepentant Moronic Nincompoops Over-and -over-again

So it is now quite apparent (as visible as the balls of a dog in fact) which race in Malaysia is the most self-centred and overtly racial.

Whither Malaysia?

Who knows, but the good news will hopefully be the demise of UMNO and all race based political parties.

Politics should aim to be secular and racially neutral, otherwise the future looks quite bleak.

Rais Yatim

Meanwhile the Minister of Information, Communication and Culture (also affectionalely known as 'Ministry of Propaganda Propagation'), Rais Yatim was reported thus:

Rais Yatim said the ministry played an important role in establishing only the right kind of information* reached the masses.

“The government is not looking to find fault with bloggers and other Internet users but would like them to follow the law to ensure they did not misuse it.”

"It is not that we are looking for faults all the time. But we would like the right of the people to be guarded by the relevant authorities and the law. "Our aim is to see the 1Malaysia concept succeed. However, in order to succeed, the facts must not be twisted or misinterpreted by some until it raises racial sentiments.”

"If the right information* does not reach the people how can there be success”?

Unbelievable BN Bullshit

Najib’s Nonsensical Nonsense

Najib claims he was not making a link between the threats of a takeover by PKR advisor Anwar Ibrahim with the Barisan` Nasional Back Benchers Club (BNBBC) members trip to Taiwan to study agriculture techniques.

The can go on trips any time it wants as it was bearing all expenses and they were for a good cause.

Rafidah’s Raving Rants

“Nobody should belittle his apology. It is not easy for a Deputy Prime Minister to do that. I was surprised that he apologised but I think that’s very good because he wants to stop this whole semantic or debate,” Rafidah Aziz said.`

It is indeed very rare for an apology to be given by a Malaysian politician, but why did Ahmad not give it himself?

Ong’s Overt Opportunity

The Government will be distributing 80 free motorcycle helmets at every university and college starting from Wednesday 10th September 2008, to ‘promote motorcycle safety and reduce fatalities’.

Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat claimed this was aimed at instil safe riding habits.

Is he certain that there is not an element of inducement to support BN included?

Muhyiddin’s Mercurial Mahathir (MGM)

He said that Mahathir expressed his intention to return to UMNO at a meeting last Saturday.

Mahathir, had said earlier that he would only return to UMNO only when there was a leadership change.

There's more to this than meets the eye!

Ahmad’s Absolute Arrogance

MALAYSIA'S BULLSHIT BUDGET 2009

Malaysia's stock market and foreign investors have been jittery since March general elections in which the opposition gained unprecedented ground, and promised to soon topple the ruling coalition.

Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, announced the Malaysian 2009 budget on Friday 29th August 2008.

Malaysia’s beleaguered federal government offered some tax cuts and perks in a 2009 budget said to be designed to restore support for the flagging administration and spur growth in the face of a global slowdown.

The budget, when it is analysed, is it seems, mainly aimed at getting the support of the overstaffed civil service, especially the police force.

PM Abdullah Badawi feebly defended his handling of the economy, which he forecast to grow by an unrealistic 5.7% this year and 5.4% in 2009, then he went on to attack the resurgent opposition led by former finance minister, and current MP Anwar Ibrahim.

The forecasts Abdullah made were much higher than those issued by institutions including the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research, which has cut its 2008 growth projection to 4.6 per cent, partly due to the domestic political turmoil

'Political rhetoric cannot contribute to the well being of Malaysians nor the economic progress of the nation,' he said in his budget speech. This is a strange thing to say, since Abdullah, Najib and all the other UMNO / BN politicians have been churning out mindless political rhetoric hour after hour, day after day, month after month, for years and years.

'Efforts by certain parties to destabilise the country by attempting to seize power through illegitimate means and without the mandate of the people, must be rejected.' Abdullah said. What is he talking about? This is just pure political rhetoric!

Anwar, who was sworn in as a MP on Thursday 28th August 2008, after winning a landslide by-election in Permatang Pauh, hopes to unseat Abdullah by 16th September 2008 though Parliamentary defections. Anwar's opposition Peoples Alliance (Pakatan Rakyat) won an unprecedented 82 of Parliament's 222 seats in March general elections, only 30 seats short of a majority.

'I will not allow disturbances to continue. I will not permit the mandate given by the people to be seized from the ruling party’, he said. What does he mean by this threat, this wild statement?

This is perhaps a clear reference to Anwar's pledge to cut retail gasoline prices if he seizes power, PM Abdullah blasted Anwar’s 'populist claims'.

If implemented, they 'would undermine the government's financial position and bequeath a bankrupt nation to the next generation,' Abdullah said.

Abdullah announced a variety of ‘measures aimed at easing the impact of rising prices of food and fuel’, these issues have triggered strong public protests and greatly diminished his own support.

Income tax is to be cut by 1% for middle and high-income earners, employees' transport allowances are to be made tax-deductible, and income tax rebates were slightly increased to remove some 100,000 very lowly paid taxpayers from the taxable income bracket.

Civil servants (who in Malaysia are generally subservient to the government and some of whom are regarded, by many members of the public, to be lazy, inefficient and non-productive) will receive a one-month salary bonus.

To try provide a better alternative to private cars, 35 billion ringgit will be spent on improving public transport over the 15 year period from 2009-14.

(The public transport in Malaysia is largely sub-standard, insufficient and often badly maintained, fatal accidents to public transport vehicles, especially express buses are all too common)

To ease the impact of rising prices on consumers, import duties on some food and household items, including microwaves and kettles as well as biscuits and fruit juice, have been reduced. Big deal, this is just flannel!

Now for the rest of the bullshit:

Abdullah said the 'caring budget' showed the government was 'responsive to the concerns of the people and has taken measures to lighten the burden of all Malaysians, particularly the lower-income group'. Bullshit.

'The Barisan Nasional government will continue to manage the economy responsibly,' he said. Bullshit.

'The opposition, on the other hand, continues to make populist claims which if implemented would undermine the government's financial position and bequeath a bankrupt nation to the next generation.' Bullshit.

Anwar, who returned to Parliament this week a decade after being sacked as deputy premier and jailed for sodomy (later overturned) and corruption, dismissed the budget as 'disappointing'.

'There are sweeteners here and there but it fails to address some fundamental flaws in the economic policies,' he told reporters.

'Our problem is competitiveness; it is the failure to attract FDI (foreign direct investment) and the failure to switch economic policies to become more resilient.'

Anwar promised to slash fuel prices if he becomes PM, after Abdullah's 41% overnight fuel price rise announced in June, which triggered widespread anger in a car-dependent nation.

Abdullah stated education, health and internal security sectors (the police) would receive extra funding in total 1.5 billion ringgit.

The police are widely regarded as being a vital support tool for BN, as they appear to be amenable to political manipulation; so allocating them more funds is beneficial to BN. Increasing the budget of the police in the past, does not seem to have helped to reduce crime in Malaysia, in fact the opposite appears to be the case.

To attempt shore up the government's flagging rural support base, 5.6 billion ringgit will be used to ‘improving food security’ over three years by trying to reduce production costs and ‘encourage higher agricultural output’. This may well be ‘pie in the sky’, and much of the money is more than likely to be siphoned off due to corrupt practices.

The Malaysian Budget 2009 will not be well received by many people, it being designed solely to try to boost support for a failing federal government. It may well do exactly the opposite. Let’s wait and see.

"Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, whose administration has been shaken by an election debacle and slowing economic growth this year, also used his annual budget speech in Parliament to mount a scathing attack on the revitalized opposition led by Anwar Ibrahim."

We are living in very interesting times.
