STRoke AWARENESS

Remember The First Three Letters.... S.T.R.

A nurse sent this, encouraging people to post it and
spread the word, so here it is.

If everyone can remember something this simple,
we could perhapd help to save someone’s life.

Please read and remember this:

STROKE IDENTIFICATION: [a case history]

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall,
she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered
to call paramedics), she said she had just tripped
over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of
food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went
about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his
wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid
passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ.
Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke,
perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.
Some don't die,
they end up in a helpless, hopeless
condition instead.

It only takes only a minute to read this...

A neurologist stated that if he could get to a stroke victim
within 3 hours he can
totally reverse the effects of a
stroke.

He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized,
diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically
cared for within 3 hours.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

There are only three things to remember,
"3" simple steps,
S T R

Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.

Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster.

The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage

if people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now medical professionals say a bystander can recognise
a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S :Ask the individual to SMILE.

T :Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE
CLEARLY
(coherently) [e.g. ‘It is sunny outside today’]

R :Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS .

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks,
call 999 immediately and describe the

symptoms to the dispatcher.

Another 'sign' of a stroke is listed below:

Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.

If the tongue is 'crooked', that is, it goes to one
side or the other
, that is also an indication of a
stroke.

If everyone who reads this learns the contents and
sends it on; you can be certain that some lives will
be saved.

PLEASE Be aware of the symptoms of a stroke,

you could help to save someone’s life today.

Selangor = Singapore in 5 years time!!

IS THIS A JOKE or PIE-IN-THE-SKY BULLSHIT?

Pie in the sky:

Bullshit:

[Meaning

Nonsense, lies, exaggeration]

STAR on-line: 19 March 2008.

“Selangor aiming to compete with Singapore

By CHRISTINA TAN

SHAH ALAM: Selangor is aiming to compete with Singapore "apple to apple" * in five years.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo said Selangor was not much different from Singapore except that it lagged in public transportation and IT facilities, and urban services quality.

“Once we are more efficient in public transportation and improve our broadband services as well as the urban services quality, Selangor and Singapore can compete apple to apple.

“We are also improving our port and airport services,” he said after launching a seminar on generating and increasing knowledge among principals and headmasters in Selangor at Dewan Jublic Perak here Monday.”

What complete and utter bullshit, pie in the sky skulduggery, or perhaps a wicked joke?

In five years time, nothing much will have changed; in fact even in the past 50 years very little has really changed for the better in many parts of Selangor!

By the way, Selangor is touted as Malaysia's most developed state, may God help the rest of Malaysia then!

Is Petrol Really Cheap in Malaysia?

It is rather complicated to compare wages and prices between different countries, but let’s try.

In the UK the national minimum wage for a person of 22 years of age and above is currently £ 5.35 per hour; if we assume an 8 hour day, a 5 day week, and an average of 22 working days each month, the minimum UK monthly wage would be:

£ 5.35 per hour x 8 hour day x 22 working days a month = £941.60 or about RM 5,960.33 per month, when using a rate of exchange £ 1 = RM 6.33

As far as I am aware there is no legislated minimum wage in Malaysia, so if we use a minimum wage of say RM 7.00 per hour, the monthly theoretical ‘minimum wage’ would be RM 7.00 x 8 x 22 = RM 1,232.00 per month = £ 194.63

(Note: Many people in Malaysia earn very much less than RM 1,232 per month)

So using the above figures, a worker earning the minimum wage in the UK earns at least 4.84 times more than a worker in Malaysia earning the assumed ‘ not so minimum wage’.

Now let us compare the prices of petrol in the UK and in Malaysia.

UNITED KINGDOM PETROL PRICE IS ABOUT £1 [or 100p] per litre [= RM 6.33 per litre]

HOW THE £1 (RM 6.33) per LITRE PRICE OF PETROL BREAKS DOWN

UK Value Added Tax: 17.50p = RM 1.11 per litre
UK Fuel Duty: 50.35p = RM 3.19 per litre
UK Production, retailers’ earning and delivery:
about 32.15p = RM 2.03 per litre
UK Total 100p = £1.00 = RM 6.33 per litre

Sources: UK Customs & Excise/BBC/Automobile Association/Retail Motor Industry Federation

Thus even in the United Kingdom the production cost of petrol and delivery, + retailers’ earnings comes to only RM 2.03 per litre
and all the rest, RM 4.30 is for fuel duty and value added tax.

There are no toll highways in the UK, so in Malaysia people are actually paying a high price to use the roads even when petrol costs RM 1.92 per litre, if you add on the Highway Tolls, the ‘real’ driving cost at least doubles to RM 3.84, or even more.

So in Malaysia motorists, in real terms, pay more than the citizens of the United Kingdom for 1 litre of petrol, however the lowest paid worker in the UK earns more than 4.84 times more than a 'not so low paid worker' in Malaysia.

The conclusion must be that Malaysian motorists are already paying far too much for petrol, if their wages are compared to the petrol price + toll charges, but I wonder what the fuel price increases will be after the Malaysian General Election March 2008?

Many tolls have already increased from 1st January 2008, and after the General Election further increases in toll charges are very likely..

The Malaysian consumers are going to be even poorer, that's for sure!

Tighten your belts for very hard times are ahead for the vast majority of

Malaysians, unless there is a positive development.

But that's all balls to me!

SURGEONS CHOOSE

Five Surgeons talk about their choice of the ideal patient.

Five surgeons are discussing the easiest patients to operate on.

The first says, "I like to see accountants on my operating table because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered."

The second responds, "Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded."

The third says, "No, I really think librarians are the best; everything inside them is in alphabetical order."

The fourth surgeon said: "You know, I like construction workers. Those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over at the end and when the job takes longer than you said it would."

The fifth surgeon probably spoke for all of us when he said: "You're all wrong. I choose BN politicians, they are the easiest to operate on."

"They have no guts, no heart, no balls, no brains, and no spine. And their brains and backsides are interchangeable."

THE CARNAGE ON MALAYSIA’S HIGHWAYS CONTINUES UNABATED

It was reported today, Sunday 17 Feb. 2008, that a toddler, aged five months, and his grandmother were killed when the car they were travelling in was involved in a four-car pile-up at km 276, that is north of Seremban, on the North-South Highway in the southbound lane, late on Friday night. (15th February 2008).

M. Sanjev Raj was in the arms of her grandmother M. Mariayee, 49, who was in the passenger seat of the Toyota Vios when the accident occurred at about 11.30pm.

They were believed to have been seriously injured after hitting the dashboard. Mariayee was then flung out of the car while Sanjev fell to the floor in front of the seat. They both died on the way to hospital.

It is understood that the Toyota Vios was hit from behind by a Toyota Camry and in turn rammed into the Honda CRV in front, which then hit a Proton Waja, the Vios then spun and the Camry burst into flames.

The toddler's parents, C. Maniraj, 35, and I. Radha, 30, escaped unhurt.

State traffic police chief ASP Abdul Halil Hamzah had stated that the driver and passenger of the Totota Camry had been admitted to a private hospital at Seremban with minor injuries.

I know that the ambulances and other emergency vehicles on the way to this accident were impeded by other vehicles which were using the emergency lane and thus were blocking it, and were preventing emergency vehicles reaching the scene of the accident quickly.

The ignorant, inconsiderate, selfish drivers of these vehicles may well bear a great measure of responsibility for the deaths of a grandmother and her five month old grandchild.
I wonder if anyone will be charged with any offences connected with this blockage of the emergency lane, most likely they will not be!

They certainly should be charged (how about involuntary manslaughter? (criminally negligent homicide), prosecuted and if found guilty, should be punished to the full extent of the law.

Where is the enforcement? If the police patrolled the roads and highways effectively ensuring that drivers drove with due care and attention, didn't over speed and race, were not reckless, didn't talk on hand held mobile phones, wore seatbelts, fitted baby seats, and so on, then the carnage on Malaysia's roads and highways would be reduced and be, in due time assigned to history.

How many more lives have to be sacrificed before something effective will be done, just talking about road safety is pointless, so are periodic half hearted campaigns centred on holidays.

Will there be no end to the carnage on the roads and highways of Malaysia?

Based on the past experience, nothing will change, express buses will still speed at over 110 km/hr with impunity, when their speed limit is a maximum of 90 km/hr as will heavy goods vehicles, private cars and motor cycles, and numerous other offences will be commonplace, what a shame!

ROAD SAFETY IS EVERY ONES RESPONSIBILITY, ISN'T IT?

Guns & Roses, an Iron Fist in Kuala Lumpur

THE IRON FIST

THEY CARRIED ONLY ROSES

The Malaysian Police suppressed a peaceful gathering by men, women and children, many of them were carrying roses as presents for the acting PM, by using tear gas, chemically laced water from water canons and physical force, in the centre of Kuala Lumpur today, many people (up to 200 has been reported) have been arrested or otherwise detained, see video click HERE. (other relevant videos can be found there too) It has been reported that bus loads of people entering the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur were detained by the police, the grounds for their detention are unknown.
A big clap from Kim Jong Il
Reuters reported:

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 (Reuters) - "Malaysian police used water cannon and tear gas on Saturday to break up an anti-government protest by ethnic Indians carrying roses to symbolise a peaceful demand for justice.

With the Malaysian government concerned about street protests in the run-up to early general elections on March 8, around 100 policemen, including riot police with helmets and shields, turned out to disperse a gathering of about 300 men, women and children.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s ruling coalition is widely expected to retain power at the polls, although with a reduced majority, but many Indians accuse his multi-racial coalition, dominated by ethnic Malays, of racial discrimination."

Several arrests were also reported yesterday (15 February 2008) as the following explains:

Mugabe loves this

"Latest Update of Bersih PC disrupted, Tian Chua arrested news from Malaysiakini.

Following the arrest of Tian Chua and Jalaluddin Abdul Manap yesterday, 15 February 2008 after a submission of memorandum to the King calling for a Royal Commission on electoral system reform, another political activist Ginie Lim with the People’s Justice Party was arrested last night at the Brickfields police station during her visit to Tian Chua and Jalaluddin Abdul Manap who was under detention.

In the Brickfields police station, Ginie Lim was arrested when she took picture of the investigating officer, Inspector Hidayak who ordered several police officers using force to carry away Tian Chua who resisted to be sent into police lockup at about 10.00pm. Inspector Hidayak alleged Ginie Lim of obstructing in the duty of police officers.

Tian Chua and Jalauddin Abdul Manap were sent to lock up cells in Pantai police station while Ginie Lim was sent to lock-up cell in Travers police station, Kuala Lumpur last night.

This morning, the three detainees were brought to the Magistrate’s Court by the police for a 4-day remand application. The police argued that the remand orders for Tian Chua and Jalaluddin were needed to conduct further investigation on others who were involved in the alleged illegal assembly. As for Ginie Lim, the police alleged that taking photographs in the police compound is an offence. However, counsel Gurmit Singh that represented the three detainees argued that the remand application for Tian Chua and Jalaluddin were unjustifiable as the police had completed investigation by taking statement from the two detainees. As for the case of Ginie Lim, Gurmit Singh argued if taking photograph in police station is an offence, the police should just charge Ginie Lim and release her on bail. However, it was disappointing that the Magistrate decided to grant the police a 3-day remand order on the three detainees. The detainees will be held until 18 February 2007.

On 18 February 2008, the police may apply for release the detainees or apply for further remand order and press charges against the detainees.

Clearly, this is an absolute abuse of powers by the police and deprived the detainees of precious personal liberty unnecessarily and unreasonably. "

Such abuses of power, undemocratic actions by the authorities, such as the suppression of freedom of speech, the denial of basic human rights, censorship, cannot but reinforce the widely held belief that Malaysia is turning in to a Dictatorial Police State.

Thanks for the tips, General.

Shocking, what a shame!

Carnage on the Roads, Tapir Road Kill

FROM THIS

AND THIS

TO

THIS

The Carnage on the Roads of Malaysia Continues

The sickening sight of a Malayan tapir or Asian tapir (Tapirus indicus) lying motionless (see above picture) on the road side slowed the traffic to a crawl along the Kuantan to Kemaman, on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, yesterday, 15 February 2008.

The young adult Tapir, weighing an estimated 250 kg, was killed, when it was hit by a vehicle, whilst the gentle animal was attempting to cross the road.

The animal’s body had been mutilated, and it its tail, right ear and tongue were missing; some bastard had cut off these body parts after the animal was run over.

The body parts of a tapir are not known to have value either as exotic food or as ingredients for traditional medicines, but who knows what was in the tiny mind of the apology for a human being who mutilated this Malayan Tapir, which is a vulnerable endangered species

Malayan or Asian tapir.

Physical characteristics:

This species of tapir is 6 to 10 feet (1.85 to 2.50 meters) long with a tail measuring 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters). They weigh 550 to 825 pounds (250 to 375 kilograms) and have a shoulder height of 35 to 41 inches (90 to 105 centimeters). This large tapir has a black coat except for the rear half above the legs, which is white.

Geographic range:

Malayan tapirs are found in Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Classification

Order: Perissodactyla (odd-toed ungulates)

Family: Tapiridae (tapirs)

Genus: Tapirus (tapirs)

Status

Classified as Vulnerable (VU A2c+3c+4c) on the IUCN Red List 2004, and listed on Appendix I of CITES .

Habitat:

Malayan tapirs live in the lowland forests of swamps and mountains up to an elevation of 6,560 feet (2,000 meters). This species needs a permanent water source with plenty of water for drinking and bathing. Highest populations are found in swamps and lowland forests.

Widely abundant in Southern Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia in the early 1930s, Asian tapir populations have rapidly declined and now survive only as isolated populations in remote or protected areas.

Habitat destruction poses the predominant threat, as a result of land being cleared for human settlement and agriculture, and rivers being dammed and land flooded for hydroelectric development.

In Sumatra, uncontrolled illegal logging still occurs.

The tapir population is strongest in Malaysia, where deforestation had declined somewhat in the recent past, however the cutting of virgin forests for hardwood logs has increased in the past few years, so the habitat of the Malayan tapir is becoming severely threatened once again..

The Asian tapir is hunted both for food and for sport. Although the flesh of tapirs was previously forbidden (haram) to Muslims areas due to the species' resemblance to pigs , very recent reports indicate that Muslims no longer equate the two and thus more people hunt them for subsistence food.

In Thailand and Myanmar the meat is considered distasteful and some tribes believe killing a tapir brings bad luck.

However, a flourishing Asian zoo trade has put a tempting price on the tapir's head, with a single animal fetching up to US$ 6,000.

Tapirs also occasionally get trapped in steel wire snares set for wild boars.

Low reproductive rate, coupled with fragmented distribution of Malayan tapirs mean that populations have a low recovery potential, and this makes the species particularly vulnerable when they are hunted or trapped, or are killed when crossing roads and highways.

Roads and Highways in Malaysia and other countries in Asia do not provide alternative crossing paths (tunnels or bridges) for wildlife to use to enable them to cross safely. Road kill is common, the victims apart apart from tapir, include, wildlife such as replitles, primates, small, medium and large mammals, and of course many types of domesticated animals and pets.

Is life, even human life, considered to be so cheap?

The relentless carnage on the roads and highways in Malaysia clearly indicates this may be true.

My post Carnage on Malaysia's Roads can be found here.

Malaysia Rides a Wave of Lawlessness and Crime

Inspector- General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Musa Hassan has been reported today (15 Feb. 2008) as saying:

“Our members are ready to serve. Other than their given duties during the election period, their daily task of crime prevention will not be neglected."

I received a forwarded email from Penang recently, the contents included:-

“Ladies… pls pls be extra be careful..yoh…….. really cannot imagine if happen to me..

Be careful girls, if going out alone better don't carry any bag. Even if you going out with your boyfriend, don't carry the bag yourself but ask your boyfriend to carry then. I bet after so many cases have happened, today guys wont mind helping their gf carry handbag.

My house mate's friend in Penang . This happened a couple of days ago.”

(Graphic photographs of the wounds were attached to the email I received, they are truly horrifying, so I will not show them here.)

“Beware of Snatch Theft

I was walking alone in a pavement along shoplots, all of sudden a man came from behind, cut the string off my sport bag, grabbed it and ran away.

It was an instinctive reaction to get the bag back and after some struggling, the theft ran away without a trace. And I was badly wounded. There are multiple slashes on my back and both legs and that caused me to require not less than 100 stitches on my body.

Please be careful while being or walking alone in quite places, especially all the ladies, those insane creatures can be extremely violent and truly harmful. Be warned. Be aware.”

The fact remains that the level of crime in Malaysia is up, just recently a lady in Penang was severely injured after having been repeatedly slashes with a sharp knife, she was attacked by a snatch thief who had initially used to knife to sever the handbag handle, but turned it on the lady when she resisted the theft.

She required 100 stitches to close the multiple wounds on her legs and back.

Crime and lawlessness are getting worse and worse and the Royal Malaysia Police seem to be oblivious to it.

Much more needs to be done to prevent crime, at present policemen on crime prevention patrols, both on foot and by motorcycle and car, are as rare as hens’ teeth!

Free & Fair Elections, are they An Elusive Dream?

NOT ONLY THE BALLOT BOXES NEED TO BE TRANSPARENT

The local media reported on 14 February 2008, that Malaysians will go to the polls on March 8.

“The Election Commission announced that nomination day for the 222 parliamentary and 505 state seats would be Feb 24.

A total of 10,922,139 registered voters on the 2007 master electoral roll gazetted on Feb 5 would be eligible to vote. Of this, 221,085 are postal voters.

The Malaysian Election Commission Chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman, had assured Malaysians that the polls would be conducted fairly and there should be no fear of vote-rigging and phantom voters.

Transparent plastic ballot boxes, indelible ink and ballot papers without serial numbers would be used in this election, he added.”

Did you listen to the announcement by the Chairman of the supposedly independent Malaysian Election Commission, he was hesitant, was unsure of what to say; this was obvious there were long periods when he stopped speaking, and one only heard whispering during which he was prompted. What a pathetic Chairman the EC has.

Any man called in off the street could have spoken better, and may have been more believable too.

If you recall, the Malaysian Federal Constitution was recently amended to enable his, (Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman) term of office as the EC Chairman, to be extended.

Going by his past performance, he is not an asset, actually more of a liability, if free and fair elections are the goal.

However, maybe he was indispensable, an ideal compliant stooge, a front man for the BN, so that a lot of whitewashing to cover up any election irregularities could be easily facilitated.

Well it remains to be seen if the election process will be free and fair, but many people have serious doubts it will be

So far there has been widespread distribution of bribes from the BN, in the form of gifts to potential voters and / or their family members, (it is interesting to note that the word ‘gift’ in German means ‘POISON’, that is most apt is it not?)

Flags of political parties are being placed everywhere, especially the UMNO & Barisan National ones are seen strung up and attached to pubic utility poles, road signs and other road furniture. (this is of course illegal), but the UMNO - BN does as it likes, it had more than two thirds majority in the last Parliament, so this, to them, equates to immunity and a carte blanc to defy the law.

Now Malaysia has no Parliament, no Government, no PM, no Ministers, and no appointed ‘Caretaker Government’, so who is in charge?

Why then, do the mainstream media still refer to Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as the Prime Minister, if there is no Parliament he is no longer the PM, is he?

Using the same logic, the former ministers and others who were elected representatives in the previous parliament should not use public funds and facilities to carry out their election campaigns, this the usual modus operandi in Malaysia, and carried under the pretext of some "Official Duties". How can there be Official Duties" to perform, when there is no Government?

“PADE DOH BN!” (ENOUGH IS ENOUGH BN!)

The time for change is now.

After 50 years of empty talk, pseudo-democracy, corrupt legislation, misrepresentation, blatant lies, bribery, corruption and insincerity.

THINK ABOUT IT. At both Federal and State Elections. VOTE WISELY.

NO MORE BN BULLSHIT!
