UMNO - How old are you now?

OR

XX

Malaysian PM Abdullah, who is the President of UMNO (Baru) is quoted as saying this at a special highly publicised event to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of UMNO!

"2,000 hadiri sambutan ulang tahun ke-62 UMNO

(2,000 attend celebration of UMNO's 62nd anniversary]
11/05/2008 12:41pm

This 62nd anniversary is surely factually untrue, is it not?

The Historically true story:-

After a series of interlocutory hearings, over the discovery of documents that took more than seven months, the matter finally came before Justice Harun Hashim in the Kuala Lumpur High Court on 4th February 1988.

The judge ruled that under the existing law he had no option but to find the party, UMNO, to be an unlawful society due to the existence of several unregistered branches — an illegal act under the Societies Act of 1966.

THUS UMNO DIED ON 4th FEBRUARY 1988 aged 42 years. RIP UMNO

The Historical True Story, continued:-

Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj (Born 8th February 1903 – Died 6th December 1990) usually affectionately known as the “Tunku" and former UMNO President Hussein Onn set up a new party called UMNO Malaysia, which claimed to be the successor to the old UMNO. UMNO Malaysia was supported mainly by members of the Team B faction from UMNO, but Mahathir was also invited to join the party leadership.

The party collapsed after the Registrar of Societies refused to register it as a society (without providing any explanation).

Mahathir showed no interest in reviving UMNO, he instead set in motion machinery to form a new surrogate party, and just one week after UMNO Malaysia's registration was rejected, formally registered a new society under the Societies Act of 1966, a new political party formally called Pertubuhan Kebangsaan Melayu Bersatu (Baru) or UMNO (Baru) [UMNO (New)]. The new parities logo was, apart from minor details, all but identical to the deregistered UMNO logo.

Thus UMNO (Baru) was born in 1988, was it not?

Eventually the suffix "(New)" was dropped, and UMNO (Baru) became both the de facto and de jure successor of UMNO (with the old UMNO's assets handed over to it).

Most of its leaders, however, were selected from Team A of the old UMNO, Team B was ignored

UNMO BARU (New UMNO) was registered as a society under the Societies Act of 1966, in 1988 so the UMNO BARU as it is now is only 20 years old, so how can it be claimed it is celebrating its 62nd anniversary?

Thanks for highlighting the truth! The Sleepy-One can go on and on about having their organisation as 62 years old, in his dreams that is. Having an old organisation doesn't mean it has any relevency nor does amount of members equates to votes.
