Manek Urai By Election: Candidates and Carrots

In 2009, UMNO (BN) will take on PAS in the Manek Urai by-election on 14th July 2009.

Candidates from theses two political parties filed their papers when nominations closed at 10:00 on Monday, 6th July 2009.

They were Mohd Fauzi Abdullah, [50], who is the PAS treasurer for Kuala Krai and Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat, [39] the Kuala Krai UMNO Youth chief (using a BN ticket), who will be going head to head against each other.

Meanwhile: Gifts to the children of the Manek Urai constituents in the form of 'aid assistance'!

Coincidence or Covertly Co-opting into Compliance?

You need to decide yourselves folks!

“The Education Ministry (i.e. the taxpayer) is providing free school uniforms and school bags to 6,142 primary, secondary and religious school students in the Manek Urai constituency.

The Kelantan State UMNO liaison chief Mustapa Mohamed said he had been informed of the 'aid allocation' for the students by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (and the MP for Pagoh, Johor, UMNO) some days ago.

“This gesture by the ministry is to lighten the burden of the people here,” he reportedly told a news conference at the Manek Urai BN operations centre on 5th July 2009.

'Aid allocation' my arse; pigs may fly!

'Bribery' is perhaps a more apt term, don't you think ?

UPDATE:

The PM when in Sibu, Sarawak, urged Malaysians to judge the Barisan Nasional government based on its actions.

Najib Razak said: "Please judge us by our actions, we are not going to play politics."

That is exactly what the people and this blogger are doing lah!

Part 2 The Gates of Hell Home at Kuala Kubu Baru

Where the Ray of Hope was extinguished

The Mindful Mariner's own comments:

This so called sheltered home (it is more like a Hell Hole) belongs to and is run by the Malaysian Government, through the Department of Social Welfare which is under the control of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

Disciplinary action needs to be taken from top to bottom, at both the Ministry & the Department; in fact the honourable thing initially, would be for the Minister (Sharizat Abdul Jalil) and the DG of the Social Welfare Department (Meme Zainal Rashid) to resign forthwith.

Then all types of care homes, shelters, orphanages and other similar institutions, public and private, should thoroughly checked and independently audited. After that they should all, without exception, be required to be operated to impeccable international standards of best practice.

Subsequently the Social Welfare Department should conduct regular frequent and comprehensive inspections of all shelters, care homes and orphanages for the disadvantaged in Malaysian society.

To ensure:

1. They are all fully equipped, sanitary and are run in a professional, caring, humane way.

2. That the are staffed by sufficient numbers of qualified, able, caring and dedicated staff.

3. That all the residents receive good quality, nutritional healthy food in sufficient quantities.

4. That all residents receive regular medical examinations and adequate health care.

And many other things, about which others are better qualified than me, need to be set out in full clearly mandating what has to be done.

PS But I am not too hopeful that effective sustained action will be taken.

There will be buckets of faux tears, sympathetic [or perhaps a better word is pathetic] remarks, much empty talking, but very little or more likely no effective action, as per usual!!!!

Reactions:

The statements by th Malaysian Bar Council:

Bar Council constitutional law committee chairman Edmund Bon said he was shocked to learn how the residents were being treated, describing it as “cruel and degrading”.

Statement by a human rights lawyer:

Amer Hamzah, human rights lawyer called on those responsible for the care of the residents to be charged with a criminal offence should there be any evidence of physical abuse resulting from the treatment.

See the news report HERE

Lots of reaction and a flurry of what is probably an attempt at 'clearing yardarms' and 'reactive damage control' from the government and their agencies:

Civil servants from the Social Welfare Department, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, volunteers and hoards of media personnel descended upon the home on Sunday 5th July 2009, after the wicked, cruel and degrading conditions there were exposed by the Star newspaper.

Minister of Health Liow Tiong Lai, reportedly ordered his staff to check on the residents of the home in Kuala Kubu Baru, and said he was wants those who are confirmed to have mental problems, to be transferred to government hospital psychiatric wards for treatment.

In Malaysia the disabled in a shelter home are treated worse than animals!

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development

The Department of Social Welfare is her responsibility

This is a welfare home, one of seven, operated by The Department of Social Welfare, click HERE

"About 30 men, naked, some chained up, caged and covered in their faeces and urine – that is the scene inside locked rooms at the Taman Sinar Harapan home... " (Ray of Hope home, more like the Kiss of Death home!!!)

This Malaysian government operated shelter home (near Kuala Buru Baru hospital and adjacent to a golf course), close to the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, is not a shelter home for the disabled, it is far worse than a goal!

Read the whole shameful exposé in the Star on-line, Click HERE & also HERE

So much for all the empty talk from the Prime Minister and his ministers in the Federal Government about how caring Malaysia is.

More deception and distortion of the facts.

Do those responsible, directly and indirectly for this shelter home, have no shame, compassion, love or basic decency?

They should be punished for their crimes against the helpless disabled residents of this shelter home.

Sadly this situation is very likely to be the norm is the six other Welfare Department shelter homes in Malaysia and in some of the private ones too.

Three Months of Najib!

The PM & DPM ++ and rent-a-crowd, doing the 1Malaysia Shuffle!

After three months of Najib as PM, what has substantively changed for the better in Malaysia?

The short answer is absolutely nothing.

There have been a heaps of verbal diarrhoea, bags full of hot air, lots of funny hats and ridiculous costumes worn, even dodgy dance routines, but really and truly there seems to have been no substantive progress towards ending overt racism, ensuring equality for all citizens, respecting freedom of speech, freedom of information, freedom of expression and human rights.

Malaysia has been afflicted by many multifarious mishaps over the last three months, buildings and roads have collapsed, controversies have been seen to increase, diseases such as malaria, leptospirosis and meningitis have blossomed, the Internal Security Act 1960, Emergency Ordinance (Public Order and Crime Prevention) 1969, Sedition Act 1948, Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 and many other archaic and draconian laws are still on the statute book, the Police Act also remains unchanged.

Politics seems to be getting dirtier than usual; whilst UMNO / BN show no signs of reinventing themselves for the better.
However, with the main stream media seemingly more under the thumb than ever nowadays, things may actually be even worse than they are reported, who knows.

Now in 2009, almost at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century, people can still be locked up without any judicial process, effectively guilty without trial.
How utterly shameful in what is touted as being a democratic country!

Harry Lee has come and gone after his extra warm welcome (excepting Dr. M), extensive exploration of the just the peninsular part of Malaysia, and his resulting insolent critique.

The superstitious may be forgiven for even believing there is a national curse which seems to have started when Najib became PM on 3rd April 2009.

Now in the second half of 2009, will Malaysia progress, further decline or simply stagnate under the stewardship of Najib?

Let's wait and see!!

The people of Malaysia are a patient lot, but even patience has a limit!

Anwar Malek could be talking about Malaysia in this interview!

"Arabs are afflicted by fantasies and obsolete and false bravado!"

In the video below, please listen to Anwar Malek, if you understand Arabic, or read the English subtitles if you do not; but whichever the case read the body language.

Anwar Malek, the Algerian author, bravely speaks the truth, that is beyond doubt, but his opinion will probably not have been well received by some in Pan Arabia.

But, the truth always hurts the most!

In my opinion a lot of what Anwar Malek said holds true for Malaysia too, but of course many in Malaysia, such as the arrogant, the stubborn, the misguided, the unthinking, the selfish, the blinkered and the misinformed will have their head in the sand and / or be wearing the Emperor's New Clothes so they will not admit this fact! They like the Arabs are afflicted by fantasies and living in cloud cookooland !!!

UTM Student Dies Alone After Giving Birth on Campus

How Shameful for UTM and for Malaysia

UTM = Uncaring Temperamental Masquerading ?

A woman who was found dead and decomposing together with her new born baby boy with his umbilical card still intact in a room of a University Teknologi Malaysia's (UTM) Skudai, Johor Bahru, hostel was, according to UTM's corporate affairs department assistant registrar (media and external relations) Sabri Ahmad, a university drop out, Sabri reportedly stated that the 26-year old woman had failed her first semester examination in her fourth year in November 2008.

Oh, so all is well then, UTM washes hands and evades any responsibility!

"She had been renting a room at the dormitory since 11 May 2009, and was from the Science faculty," he said.

Evidently outsiders were allowed to rent rooms at the university on a case-by-case basis.

This is a very peculiar situation, is this really true? New students are even currently unable to get proper on-campus accommodation.

IT SOUNDS AND SMELLS LIKE UTM BULLSHIT TO ME

Meanwhile, the head of Johor Baru (North) police A C Ruslan Hassan was reported as saying that the police had taken the baby's DNA samples to locate the father and stated that the unmarried? woman, who was from Kelantan was believed to have died from excessive blood loss whilst in labour and giving birth.

May the mother and her child find rest in heavenly peace.

Malaysia: Cultured, Genteel, Enlightened, Progressive, Tolerant, my arse!

According to reports in the Malaysian, government owned Main Stream Media (MSM) the police have implemented most of the 125 recommendations contained in the 2005 report by the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysian Police.

DIGP Ismail Omar steps have been taken to forge closer ties with the public through community policing and frequent meetings with residents.

"Both the state and district police chiefs have held regular meetings with residents' associations to hear their grouses and the problems they face," he reportedly said yesterday.

"These are part of measures to rebuild the public's confidence in the police force, besides encouraging them to cooperate with us and provide vital tip-offs."

What a laugh, anyway, believe it or not, be that as it may!

The MSM didn't report this:- (update: see below)

The police last night cordoned off a opposition political party's [DAP] fund-raising dinner held for some 3,000 people in Klang and confiscated the public address system, however later they allowed the dinner to continue at 8.15pm

Police with M16s were guarding area, Lim Kit Siang likened it to a war zone

There were 900 cops wasting their time there according to the belated report in the Star, see below.

Do the police have nothing better to do? Malaysia is very far from being crime free!!

In addition yet another recent case of apparent police brutality does not seem to have been reported in the Malaysia MSM, apart from a report HERE, either.

The police in Malaysia seem to have yet again behaved like gangsters and thugs, see video below, when a 20 year old student was allegedly beaten black and blue by the cops whist handcuffed in a police station.

Little did 20-year-old college student Koh Chon Weng suspect that a night out at a club with friends would pave the way for a horrendous experience which he will never ever be able to forget.

Koh Chon Weng, still bore the scars of his ordeal when interviewed on video, he claimed that he was arrested and beaten up by policemen for no apparent reason.

"I was handcuffed, punched and kicked for several minutes. And when I spat the blood which oozed out from my mouth on the floor, I was beaten again for this," recalled the soft-spoken accounting student during a press conference at the DAP office in Petaling Jaya.

Banned T Shirts

Meanwhile, dangerous T Shirts have been confiscated by the police in Malaysia.

The Ministry of Home Affairs apparently deemed the images [see below] to be obscene, subversive and likely to glorify communism.

You judge for yourself,

I think the slogans on the T shirts are quite amusing, and generally harmless.

I see this T shirt, which is quite appropriate in this context,

is not included in the banned T shirt list.

In Solidarity with the Noble People of Burma

DAW ANG SAN SUU KYI ADDRESSING SOME OF HER SUPPORTERS

This post is made in support of and in solidarity with the noble people of Burma, may they soon be free of the cruel fascist dictator Than Shwe and his evil cohorts who have raided, raped & ruined Burma for far too long.

DAW ANG SAN SUU KYI
The Angel of Burma

DAW ANG SAN SUU KYI

In The Quiet Land
(By Daw Aung San Suu Kyi)

In the Quiet Land, no one can tell
if there's someone who's listening
for secrets they can sell.
The informers are paid in the blood of the land
and no one dares speak what the tyrants won't stand.

In the quiet land of Burma,
no one laughs and no one thinks out loud.
In the quiet land of Burma,
you can hear it in the silence of the crowd

In the Quiet Land, no one can say
when the soldiers are coming
to carry them away.
The Chinese want a road; the French want the oil;
the Thais take the timber; and SLORC * takes the spoils...

In the Quiet Land....
In the Quiet Land, no one can hear
what is silenced by murder
and covered up with fear.
But, despite what is forced, freedom's a sound
that liars can't fake and no shouting can drown.

* State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) now renamed the State Peace And Development Council, or the COUNCIL OF DEVILS to use a much more appropriate name.

Devil Than Shwe

The Devils of Burma are led by Than Shwe, military dictator and head of the ruling junta in Burma (Myanmar), he is a secretive vindictive monster.

He shows no qualms about having dissidents, journalists, and even Buddhist monks were beaten, jailed, tortured, or executed.

He is very superstitious, in 2005 he moved the national capital essentially overnight, on the advice of an astrologer.

The multi-medalled-megalomaniac Than Shwe, where did he get all those medals?
He has never fought in any war!

He has absolute power, but Than Shwe is so reclusive that most of the Burmese people have never even heard his voice.

Smuggled video footage (see below) of the sumptuously vulgar wedding thrown for his daughter sparked outrage across the country, as it provided a glimpse of the lifestyle of the very rich at the expense of the majority in Burma who are totally oppressed and remain very poor.

Religion as the Opiate of the Masses Iranian Style

Ali Khamenei

Not only that, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei preached hatred too in his 100 minute plus sermon at Tehran 's University on 19th June 2009.

He spoke to a massive congregation, which in true rent-a crowd 'democratic style' had been brought in from all over Iran. They appeared to cheer on cue and acted in unison like robots.

Democracy, as it should be, does not exist in Iran, what does seem to exist is a hard-line government which is using Islam as to tool to retain support, a classic case of religion being used as a means to subdue and control the people.

Khamenei may be kicked out of his job as the Supreme Leader of Iran quite soon, so he seems to be betting on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to fight for his survival.

UMNO = MUON?

MUON

Perhaps UMNO is a anagram of MUON?

A MUON is an unstable lepton common in cosmic radiation.

Well UMNO is certainly unstable and very common, perhaps not cosmic, but most certainly comic, and definitely as dangerous as radiation.

To break it down further let's look at the lepton.

A lepton is any member of a class of subatomic particles that only respond only to electromagnetic force, weak forces and gravitational force and are not affected by strong force.

Leptons are said to be elementary particles; that is, they do not appear to be made up of smaller units of matter.

Leptons can either carry one unit of electric charge or be neutral.

The charged leptons are the electrons, muons and taus.

Each of these types has a negative charge and a distinct mass.

So that brings things together, a Muon is a negatively charged lepton, an dense elementary particle not made up of smaller units, responsive to gravitational and weak forces, unaffected by strong forces.

UNMO can certainly be charged as being negative, base, and a stubborn, dense, minute mass which seems to be unmoved by strong opposition, but is responsive to weaknesses and will undoubtedly suffer from the forces of gravity and fall in due course.

BA JIN

The Main Asteroid Belt

shown in white

Perhaps NAJIB is an anagram for BAJIN?

Bajin is a main belt asteroid discovered on 25th November 1997.

Well Najib has a main belt, which can be observed to be getting bigger by the day; and he like an asteroid, is not living in the real world.

To conclude:

UMNO is an unstable and common insignificant particle, which only responds to electromagnet force, weak forces and gravity!

Whilst NAJIB is, it seems, condemned to outer space from where oblivion is inevitable.

Ahmad Shabery Cheek has a Damned Cheek

Ahmad Shabery Cheek, do you remember his debate with Anwar Ibrahim?

According to Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek, people with a disability should not be referred to as ‘disabled’ but rather be collectively labeled ‘People with Special Ability’ he reportedly said, as that that would “best fit their description”.

He said the term ‘People with Special Ability’ does not portray a negative perspective on the person with a disability.

Many of them are not ‘disabled’ because they have special qualities that sometimes even a normal person cannot match. “For example, a paralympic athlete has such a high level of commitment, determination and competitiveness compared with a normal person,” he said.

Apart from sportsmen, they (disabled) have also contributed vastly towards the growth of a nation by being doctors, teachers, lecturers, businessmen and craftsmen, he said.

I would like to see the list of paralympic athletes, doctors, teachers, lecturers, businessmen and craftsmen from the disabled community in Malaysia, it cannot be a very long list, as most disabled people in Malaysia are living in poverty or are finding it difficult to make ends meet.

You may or not agree with him, I certainly do not.

He is just paying lip service to the disabled, garnering support and attempting to curry favour, and votes for UMNO / BN from the disabled community in the next election.

By implication, he had clearly stated that he considers the disabled to be 'abnormal people' when he said this, as quoted from the National News Agency BERNAMA report:

At the same time, there are also normal human beings who become useless to the community, ‘disabled’ because people like drug addicts, criminals, beggars and jobless do not in any way contribute to the nation.”

Before he came out with the nonsense above he had handed out contributions to 140 children from six Department of Social Welfare community centres, during a charity programme at Kompleks Penyayang, Kampung Mak Chili in Chukai near Kemaman. You can bet your bottom dollar that the donations were from tax-payers money and not from the ministers or even UMNO or BN funds.

Ahmad Shabery Cheek is, talking rubbish.

A disability is nothing to be ashamed about, it does not portray negativity at all.

The WHO defines “Disability as follows:

Disabilities is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions.

An impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations.

Thus disability is a complex phenomenon, reflecting an interaction between features of a person’s body and features of the society in which he or she lives.

Disability is defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 as "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. "An individual may also qualify as disabled if he/she has had an impairment in the past or is seen as disabled based on a personal or group standard or norm. Such impairments may include physical, sensory, and cognitive or intellectual impairments. Mental disorders (also known as psychiatric or psychosocial disability) and various types of chronic disease may also be considered qualifying disabilities. A disability may occur during a person's lifetime or may be present from birth.

In the United Kingdom, The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) defines a disabled person as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

The definition

For the purposes of the Act:

  • substantial means neither minor nor trivial

  • long term means that the effect of the impairment has lasted or is likely to last for at least 12 months (there are special rules covering recurring or fluctuating conditions)

  • normal day-to-day activities include everyday things like eating, washing, walking and going shopping

  • a normal day-to-day activity must affect one of the 'capacities' listed in the Act which include mobility, manual dexterity, speech, hearing, seeing and memory

Some conditions, such as a tendency to set fires and hay fever, are specifically excluded.

People who have had a disability in the past that meets this definition are also covered by the scope of the Act. There are additional provisions relating to people with progressive conditions.

The DDA 2005 amended the definition of disability. It ensured that people with HIV, cancer and multiple sclerosis are deemed to be covered by the DDA effectively from the point of diagnosis, rather than from the point when the condition has some adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

In Malaysia the disabled are condemned to live on the fringes of society, patronised, pitied, thrown the odd crumb here and petty hand-out there, they are all but ignored. Our disabled brothers and sisters are even feared by some, as they are regarded as bad luck, a 'pantang', or unclean and unworthy of respect.

Using a new expression, such as the idiotic ‘People with Special Ability’ will do nothing to help the disabled.

Anyway, how does one define ‘People with Special Ability’?

What is needed is a comprehensive Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) exactly as there is in the UK and elsewhere in the developed world, and it must be enforced 100%.

If not for the help of NGOs the disabled in Malaysia would be even worse off than they are now, as the Department of Social Welfare is not efficient in playing the role it rightly should.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport is now only the 7th Best in the World

KLIA Going Down the Shoot?

I wonder why this news could not be seen in the Malaysian media today, if it was there, it must have been well hidden?

Try harder next year KLIA and Malaysia Airports Berhad.

South Korea's Incheon International Airport was voted the best in the world, according to a 10-month survey of airline passengers.

Incheon, located about 70 km (43 miles) from Seoul, South Korea, is one of the busiest airports in the world.

The 'Skytrax' survey asked 8.6 million passengers at 190 airports to rate the facilities based on their experiences at check-in, arrival, departure and transfer.

Incheon edged out Hong Kong's International Airport and Singapore's Changi Airport .

This annual survey also judges airports on individual categories.

Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates came out tops for having the best duty-free shops.

Hong Kong served the best food.

Helsinki-Vantaa in Finland is least likely to lose passengers' bags. and

Japan's Kansai International has the cleanest restrooms.

The top 10 airports, according to the survey, are:

  1. Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea

  2. Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong

  3. Changi Airport, Singapore

  4. Zurich Airport, Switzerland

  5. Munich Airport, Germany

  6. Kansai International Airport, Japan
