Elected Representatives Arrested Outside the National Palace in Kuala Lumpur

At about 10:00 today, Saturday 14th June 2008, several elected representatives (Members of Parliament) from opposition party PKR (National Justice Party) were arrested for gathering outside the Istana Negara (National Palace) in Kuala Lumpur, this palace is the official residence of HM The King of Malaysia.

It seems that even gathering outside the gates of the Palace is an arrestable offence in Malaysia, the tourists better beware!

UPDATE:
The three Mps who were arrested were R. Sivarasa (Subang), S. Manikavasagam (Kapar) and Zuraida Kamaruddin (Ampang).

Three other three persons were arrested, they were the gathering’s organising committee member Lourdes Mary, human rights lawyer N. Surendran and Zuraida’s special assistant Salmah Ismail.
