*(UPDATE Various news reports say the ravine was 10 or even 20 metres deep)
(see summary below)
Two passengers, a man and a woman, were killed [both had serious head and body injuries] and 41 were injured, 17 of them seriously, when the tour bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a nine-metre deep ravine at Km 22.5 of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway, near Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday evening (3rd June 2008.)
A number of foreign tourists are among the injured but their nationalities could not yet be determined.
The bus which was on its way from Genting Highlands to the federal capital was believed to have been driven far too fast in heavy rain before it went off the road and landed down in the ravine.
"The incident was witnessed by some motorists and Orang Asli (Aborigines) from a nearby village.
44 firemen from the Ampang Jaya, Jalan Hang Tuah, Wangsa Maju and Selayang Rire and Rescue stations took about two hours to remove the dead and injured from the badly damaged bus, two dogs from the police canine unit in Jalan Kelang Lama were also involved in the rescue operation.
It is learnt that police have detained the bus driver, who is slightly injured, for investigation and would take down statements from the injured passengers and the bus company operator on the accident.
Lackadaisical
Zero enforcement, maniac bus drivers, profit only orientated bus companies, and general malaise are all to blame of the continual carnage on the roads, tour buses, express coaches, and other buses are potential death traps, I always advise folks to avoid them like the plague!
In Malaysia safety is just a word, nothing more!
Road safety is just two words!
