ANWAR ACCUSED of SODOMY; Tell me the same old story!

Will the police really investigate and get to the bottom of this, or will they just pander to the BN political whims and fancies?

The Prime Minister and his Barisan Nasional government must be really desperate when they have to resort to attempt to resurrected and re-run an old fabricated story.

CNN reported that:

"Malaysian opposition leader accused of sodomy"

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was accused late on Saturday night 28th June 2008, of sodomy, police and politicians said, sparking speculation that he might be arrested on the same charge that led to his imprisonment a decade ago.

"The police report lodged against me earlier today is a complete fabrication," Anwar, 60, said in a written statement.

He contended that the report was engineered by "interested parties" to prevent him from exposing the national police chief and the attorney general for their alleged role in having him accused of corruption and sodomy in 1998.

The dramatic developments that began to unfold a little before midnight will have a severe impact on Malaysian politics, which have been thrown into turmoil since the 8th March 2008 elections in which the governing National Front coalition returned its worst-ever result.

Sodomy, even if consensual, is punishable by 20 years in prison in Muslim-majority Malaysia.

It is believed that the aide was coerced into making the accusation.

The aide was reported missing Saturday morning, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

"Police in Malaysia say they are investigating renewed sodomy allegations against the opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim."

A 23-year-old aide to Mr Anwar is said to have filed the complaint.

Mr Anwar has denied the claim, saying it is designed to block his political resurgence after success at the polls, he said they were "a complete fabrication".

The ex-Deputy PM was jailed in 1998 on sodomy and corruption charges he has said were politically motivated. The sodomy conviction was later overturned, and, although freed from jail in 2004, the corruption conviction barred him from holding any political office until 15th April 2008.

In a written statement he said: "I believe we are witnessing a repeat of the methods used against me in 1998 when false allegations were made under duress."

One of his senior aides told the BBC: "This is a photocopy of the script from 10 years ago."

A party spokesman said Mr Anwar had been moved to a foreign embassy in the capital Kuala Lumpur for his own safety.

Mr Anwar, 60, said the sodomy claim was aimed at stopping the opposition from gaining further ground.

"This is clearly a desperate attempt by the regime to arrest the movement of the Malaysian people towards freedom, democracy and justice," he said.

"Anwar Ibrahim faces sodomy probe"

Anwar Ibrahim, the Malaysian opposition leader who once was the country's deputy prime minister, has been accused of sodomising a male aide.

Anwar's lawyer has denied the allegation and Anwar himself called it a "complete fabrication".

The opposition Keadilan party said that Saiful Bahari (? Bukhari), one of Anwar's aides, had been arrested on Saturday and "forced" to make a statement saying Anwar had sodomised him.

Anwar told Al Jazeera the accusations are politically motivated.

"This is because there is growing support for the People's Alliance [group of opposition parties] among members of parliament ... the government is under threat and there is also a lot of disgruntlement among the Malaysian public against the abuse of power and economic woes," Anwar said.

"I have also made it known that I have in my possession, documents implicating the inspector-general of police and the attorney-general in misconduct, including the fabrication of evidence in the cases launched against me in 1998 and 1999.”

Anwar said those involved had allegedly tampered with evidence.

"I fear for my safety ... my friends are very concerned for my safety. I was beaten to near death when I was in detention ... but they [the authorities] have given a flimsy statement that I will not be arrested for now."

The accusation comes 10 years after Anwar was ousted from the government in a power struggle amid accusations of corruption and sodomy.

He was convicted on both charges.

The sodomy conviction was later overturned, but only after he had served six years in jail.
