POLITICAL NEPOTISM, AN ETERNAL DYNASTY MALAYSIA STYLE

FEATURING : The Son-in-Law

Is Malaysian Politics a “Family Business”?

It certainly looks like it is.

Political nepotism, is a common practice in Malaysia, and it seems to be becoming more widespread; this time around several seats in the General Elections are being “handed on” from one generation to another, as though they are family run private businesses.

The business must be really lucrative if such measures have to be taken to keep the ‘political business profits’ all in the family.

Some of the family star players in this political soap opera are:

Chua Tee Yong (Johor - Labis)
Father: Former Health Minister Dr Chua Soi Lek

Lim Si Pin (FT - Batu)
Father: Gerakan president Dr Lim Keng Yaik

Roselinda Abdul Jamil (Klang - Port Klang)
Father-in-law: Selangor exco, UMNO Zakaria Md Deros

Datuk Ling Hee Leong (Perak - Gopeng)
Father: Former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik

Datuk Seri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman (Sarawak - Kota Samarahan)
Father: Sarawak Chief Minister, PBS Abdul Taib Mahmud

Lim Guan Eng (Penang - Bagan)
Father: Opposition leader (DAP) Lim Kit Siang (OP)
Guan Eng's wife, Betty Chew is the incumbent Kota Laksamana state assemblyman (woman)

Gobind Singh Deo (Johor) (OP)
Father: DAP national chairman Karpal Singh

Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir (Kedah - Jerlun)
Father: Former prime minister UMNO Dr Mahathir Mohamad

Dr Asraf Wajdi Dusuki (Kelantan - Tumpat)
Father: Former Tumpat MP, UMNO Dusuki Ahmad

Nolee Ashilin Mohd Radzi (Perak - Tualang Sekah)
Father: Perak executive councillor, UMNO Mohd Radzi Manan

Datuk Wan Norashikin Wan Noordin (Perak - Kg Gajah)
Mother-in-law: UMNO Pasir Salak Wanita chief Ainon Khariyah Mohd Abas

Datuk Zein Isma Ismail (Selangor - Kota Damansara)
Uncle: Selangor executive councillor, UMNO Mokhtar Dahlan

and not forgetting KJ (NS Rembau) the Son-in-Law of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, UMNO

(OP) = Opposition

All the rest are from BN component parties.

So there is certainly the ‘carry on the family business’ spirit in BN, however as far as the opposition goes, it is a quite rare practice.

Note: The opposition party personalities do not benefit very much from their elected political positions, compared with those from the BN component parties.

As far as Nurul Izzah Anwar (FT), is concerned, she is the daughter of
PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (OP) and Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, her participation is understandable considering that her father is barred from politics until a date after the General Election

Soon the Malaysian voters will be able to decide if they approve of political dynasties, and nepotism.
