He earned his Bachelor of Laws degree [LL.B Legum Baccalaureus ] from King's College, London and received his prior education at the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar.

In the United Kingdom Nik Nazmi was active in the UK Executive Council for Malaysian Students (UKEC), Federation of Students Islamic Societies and the National Union of Students, UK.

His commentaries on important current issues have appeared in Malaysiakini, the Sun, the Edge, in Malaysia, and internationally on Channel News Asia and the BBC World Service.

Nik Nazmi currently works in Kuala Lumpur, as Confidential Secretary to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and also as a director of a listed company.

Earlier in his career, he was a legal executive in a Malaysian corporation.
