Open Letter From Tengku Razaleigh on the death of Teoh Beng Hock

Mr Teoh Beng Hock’s death marks a watershed in the attitude of the public towards their government. The government has plumbed a new low in loss of credibility. Many people have come up to tell me in anger or despair that they feel their country has gone off the rails. People who previously considered themselves apolitical have been roused into active engagement.

There have been too many deaths under custody. But this death is particularly disturbing because Mr Teoh died after interrogation by a specially commissioned watchdog agency, inaugurated with fanfare last year by the outgoing administration. The very agency set up to combat the abuse of power has become in the public eye a symbol of the abuse of power.

Mr Teoh was a mere witness. He was questioned about the possible misuse of funds by his employer, a state assemblyman, to buy flags for the last Merdeka celebrations. The sum in question was RM2,400. He was questioned for eight hours through the night. He was found dead the following day outside the MACC’s headquarters.

Mr Teoh, 30, would have registered his marriage last weekend. His fiancée is two-months pregnant.

If the Perak debacle reminded us of the importance of the Constitution, the death under suspicious circumstances of Mr Teoh Beng Hock has brought home in a heart-wrenching way how much we need our public institutions to be independent and law-abiding. A shocked public is demanding answers, and rightly so.

Questions about how Mr Teoh died cannot be shut down with the usual warning that it is “liable to confuse the public” because the public is already confused. We are confused about how an idealistic young man with everything to live for can enter the headquarters of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission as a witness one day and be found dead outside the next.

Questions about the death of Mr Teoh cannot be swept aside with the paternalistic instruction to “leave it to the authorities to investigate,” because the death of Mr Teoh appears to be just the result of “leaving it to the authorities investigate.” It is precisely the independence of the investigating authorities that people are questioning.

Questions about the death of Mr Teoh cannot be suppressed with the warning “not to speculate” when the investigating authorities were apparently able to prognosticate, ahead of their own investigations, that foul play was not involved, and some leaders appear to have special knowledge that Mr Teoh jumped to his death of his own accord.

Questions about the death of Mr Teoh cannot be evaded with the low tactic of racializing the issue because the death of Mr Teoh touches us all as citizens, brothers and sisters and fathers and mothers. None of us wants to live under a government apparatus that cannot be trusted to be independent and to tell the truth.

Questions about the death of Mr Teoh cannot be suppressed with authoritarian prohibitions because they are about the integrity and independence of institutions that belong to the people. Those ministers who talk down to the people may have forgotten who put them into government and pays their wages, and whose questions they were put there to ask. And to answer.

To ask such questions is not to “politicize” the issue but to exercise our ownership of an issue that touches each and every one of us as citizens: our basic institutions are rotted out, and we are headed down the path of a failed state.

It is our right and indeed our duty as citizens to keep asking questions when someone dies under circumstances that put the entire government under a shadow. As we ask these questions let us accept our joint responsibility to push uncompromisingly for an overhaul of the key institutions that have rotted through under exactly the kind of authoritarianism that would prohibit discussion of the circumstances of the death of Mr Teoh Beng Hock.

This letter from Tengku Razaleigh, focusses clearly on the issue, and is a breath of fresh air at a time when the air in Malaysia is becoming increasing corrupted, rancid and polluted, by lies, half-truths, deception, bribery, fudging, spinning, arrogance, greed, selfishness and political posturing.

What is required is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Anything less than this will be insufficient.

The Curious Tale of the Honest Farmer and the Ludicrous Shithead

Yuppy invasion

A local farmer named Ennee Wone was overseeing his herd in a remote pasture in Bolehland when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him.

The driver, a young man in an Armani suit, Gucci shoes, RayBan sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the farmer, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?"

The farmer looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure, why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a page on the Internet, where he calls up a series of GPS satellites to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to a NASA satellite that scans the area to produce an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg , Germany. Within a few seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data is stored.

He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-colour, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the farmer and says, "You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves."

"That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says the honest farmer.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Then the farmer says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?"

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, why not?"

"You're a graduate from Oxford and an UMNO Member of Parliament," says the farmer.

"Wow! That's correct," exclaims the yuppie with the customary UMNO 'Wow Factor',

"But how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required," answered the farmer. "You showed up here even though nobody called you; you wanted to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question which I had never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter you are, and you don't know a thing about cows. This is a herd of sheep.

Now give me back my dog."

UMNO Spin or Fact?

Truth or Lies, or even different versions of the Truth & Lies?

RGB

Real, Generated or Blatant

Perhaps Nik Aziz did indeed commend Kartika Sari Sewi Shukarno for accepting her whipping punishment, without an appeal, but did he actually say all that was reported by the NST?

Read this news (please click HERE) reported by the Malaysian UMNO controlled newspaper New Straits Times.

If what Nik Aziz is reported to say is really true, and not the result of UMNO spin doctoring, then it may be a much needed boost for UMNO's flagging support.

If it is untrue, then it will be yet another nail in the UMNO / BN coffin.

Most Malaysians would, I feel, prefer a more secular government, rather than a fundamentalist Islamic one under which brutal, cruel and inhuman punishments like, whipping, amputation, stoning to death and beheading are the norms.

This news has so far NOT been seen in any other news media, including the PAS on-line daily news Harakah Online click HERE.

Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Punishments in Malaysia

One frame from a smuggled video showing a prisoner being caned in Malaysia.

Source of picture

Female model (a Singapore resident) Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarnor was fined RM 5,000 (US$ 1,411) or three years in jail and in addition ordered to be flogged (by whipping or caning) six times by an Islamic Court judge in the state of Pahang, Malaysia for drinking a glass of beer

Is Malaysia degenerating into a narrow minded, inward looking, cruel, extreme, unthinking fundamentalist Islamic State?

Where will it go from here?

Public executions by beheading,

Amputation of limbs,

Stoning to death?

Etc.

Almost at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century Malaysia is seemingly reverting to the ways of the past, blindly following Saudi Arabia and other extreme regimes which inflict cruel, inhuman, brutal and degrading punishments on offenders.

I was under the impression that Malaysia was a modern Parliamentary Democracy, which is aiming to be a highly developed, rich and well respected nation. Perhaps my perception was totally incorrect?

Be forewarned of Bangkok airport scam!

Help to kill it, and nab all those involved in it

Read about it HERE, there have been numerous other reports circulated by email.

The best solution is to boycott the duty free shops and indeed all shops at airports in Thailand, and be very very careful elsewhere in SE Asia too.

Give them a wide berth folks, shop elsewhere.

The duty free shop in Changi Airport, Singapore and in Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia, should be OK. But when ever you shop, always remember:

Those who are responsible, directly or indirectly, for the death of Teoh Beng Hock must be brought to justice.

Also, the idiotic and rhetorical statements, by UMNO / BN supporters, about the political opposition in Malaysia targeting Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) because is a Malay race dominated government agency, should stop. What inane stupidity to even suggest that!

This matter extends beyond skin colour, it’s not about race, or religion or ethnicity; wake up you blinkered, narrow minded, hypocrite dumb arses who wrote, or were quoted, in the UMNO / BN controlled main stream media.

Muhyiddin

UMNO / BN has truly failed Malaysians for over 50 years.

Even DPM Muhyiddin Yassin has admitted that after more than 50 years under the thumb of UMNO led BN coalition, that even today 20th July 2009, more than 125,000 children of school age, many of them in remote and isolated places, still were not attending school.

He was reported as saying, effort has to be taken to ensure that all children had equal access to education.

He also reportedly said, priority should be given to making available an adequate number of quality teachers to work in the rural and remote areas.

A Sailor's Farewell to Captain Yusof Ahmad

Al fatihah Captain Yusof Ahmad

Sailor's Farewell

It's our time to go now,
: Haul away your anchor, :
It's our sailing time.

Get some sail upon her,
: Haul away your halyards, :
It's our sailing time.

Get her on her course now,
: Haul away your fore sheet, :
It's our sailing time.

Waves are rolling under,
: Haul away down Channel, :
On the evening tide.

When my days are over,
: Haul away for heaven, :
God be by my side.

It's our time to go now,
: Haul away your anchor, :
It's our sailing time.

Earlier today I received the very sad news that. a consummate seeker of the truth, a good friend, fellow mariner and blogger, Captain Yusof Ahmad, who blogged as The Ancient Mariner, had passed away in his sleep at his home this morning 19th July 2009.

The last time I spoke to Captain Yusof was when he telephoned me after the recent death of his dear mother, when he apologised for not informing me sooner of her demise; and now, sadly, he too has passed away and we shall not be able to meet again to yarn.

Captain Yusof leaves behind his beloved wife and four children.

My sincere, heartfelt and deepest condolences to them all.

Bon voyage my dear friend. You will be deeply missed and always remembered for your selflessness, courage, truthfulness, honour, dignity, kindness, humility and humanity.

May you rest in eternal peace.

Al fatihah.

The beautiful song is by Roger Whittaker, is a fitting tribute to

'The Ancient Mariner' Captain Yusof.

Lyrics

The Last Farewell

There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbour
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell

refrain:
For you are beautiful
And I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
(repeat)

I heard there's a wicked war a blazing
And the taste of war I know so very well
Even now I see the foreign flag a raising
Their guns on fire as we sail into hell
I have no fear of death; it brings no sorrow
But how bitter will be this last farewell

refrain:
For you are beautiful
And I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
(repeat)

Though death and darkness gather all about me
And my ship be torn apart upon the seas
I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands
In the heaving waves that brought me once to thee
And should I return safe home again to England
I shall watch the English mist roll through the dell

refrain:
For you are beautiful
And I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
(repeat)

Nine Christians Reported Arrested in Malaysia

This chart is in interpretation and adaptation of material found in Adherents.com (http://adherents.com),
The percentiles of individual world religions add up to more than 100% because the numbers used are the
upper limits of estimates. Except for Judaism, only the most populous faith traditions are included. The
percentiles of denominations within religions add up to slightly less than 100% because small splinter
groups are not part of the chart.

Source

AP reports:

“Malaysian police have arrested nine Christians accused of trying to convert Muslim university students - a serious crime punishable by prison in this Muslim-majority country, a lawyer said on Wednesday.

The suspects have denied the allegation, which could aggravate complaints by religious minorities that authorities are increasingly ignoring their rights in favour of Islam.

Proselytising of Muslims by members of other religions is forbidden in Malaysia, though the reverse is allowed. Muslims, who comprise nearly two-thirds of Malaysia's 28 million people, are also not legally permitted to change religion.

Police detained the nine in a hostel room at the Universiti Putra Malaysia near Kuala Lumpur late on Tuesday, said Annou Xavier, a lawyer who handles cases involving religion.”

This is the other side of the story:

“Four students from Hong Kong were hauled up for questioning by Selangor police for allegedly trespassing on Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) grounds. They were later released.”

Read the report in the Star, Malaysia by clicking HERE

You choose for yourself which tale to believe, however .in my opinion, the former is more believable. University campuses, even in Malaysia, are not well know for tight security and arrests for simple trespass almost unheard of!

Manek Urai: A Victory for PAS and the PKR

"All her guest did was to give premier Najib Abdul Razak a ‘C’ or ‘D’ rating for his first 100 days in office.

It was enough to see ntv7 talk-show host Florence Looi being issued a warning letter and an immediate transfer to the news desk of the private television station.

Looi, who hosts the popular ‘Point of View’ current affairs programme, was said to have ‘breached editorial policy’, according to ntv7 sources.

The two guests on the talk-show, aired on July 5, were author Syed Akhbar Ali and consulting editor Leslie Lau of news portal Malaysian Insider. It was the latter’s remarks that landed Looi in trouble.

The sources said she was verbally told that she should not have asked her guests to rate Najib’s performance. As Looi is the host-cum-producer of the programme, she was the only one who received the warning letter.

Looi, who is assistant assignment editor, has since been reassigned to cover news, ostensibly because of a shortage of human resources at the news desk."

BN / UMNO's Blatant Unmitigated Bribery:

The Education Ministry is providing free school uniforms and bags to 6,142 primary, secondary and religious school students in Manek Urai.

Kelantan UMNO liaison chief Mustapa Mohamed said he was informed of the aid allocation for the students by DPM and Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin several days ago.

“This gesture by the ministry is to lighten the burden of the people here,” he told a news conference at the Manek Urai Barisan Nasional operations centre yesterday.

While 300 students received the free school uniforms and bags yesterday, Mustapa said the rest would be handed out in stages.

He had earlier presented the uniforms and bags to the pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan Manek Urai Baru on behalf of Muhyiddin.

There are 10 primary and 12 secondary schools as well as an Arabic-medium school in the town.

Muhyiddin's UMNO Blackmail Attempt Disguised or is it Blatant Unashamed Bribery again?
DPM Muhyiddin Yassin gave voters in Manek Urai a simple choice - either choose PAS or choose BN / UMNO and then get a new bridge for the Manek Urai State constituency.
Muhyiddin said:
We can build it (the bridge), insya’allah, but there is a condition."
"It is easy - all you need to do is to ‘pangkah’ (vote), but you must vote for BN."
"If not, there would not be any new bridge."
"If you want the bridge, vote BN,”
Muhyiddin Yassin said Manek Urai will become a new development area in Kelantan , but only if the Barisan Nasional (BN) wins the constituency’s by election.

"If that (development) is what they want, we are ready to help but they must also be ready to help us," he told reporters after launching the Kelantan state Teachers’ Day celebration at the Manek Urai Baru National School.

More tax-payers' Money Down the Drain reinventing RELA

RELA

RELA training centres nationwide will, it has been reported, be upgraded to ensure members are better trained and able to play their role effectively to 'help maintain the nation's security'.

The RELA director general, Zaidon Asmuni, was reported as saying recently that present there were only four training centres nationwide and it was his target to establish one in each state in the near future.

He added RELA aimed to provide members with the best training available to ensure they were well prepared to carry out their duties and also able to take on new challenges.

Utter bullshit, pure and unadulterated.

Please enlighten everyone: What contribution does RELA actualy make to Malaysia's security in 2009?

What is RELA supposed to be?

Ikatan Relawan Rakyat Malaysia (RELA) was established on 11th January 1972 vide the (Essential Powers) Emergency Act 1964 – Essential Rules (Ikatan Relawan Rakyat) (Amendment) 2005.

RELA's establishment was supposedly formed to enable the masses to volunteer and be a member of a volunteer force to preserve and maintain the national peace and security.

Subsequently, under Section 2 of the (Essential Powers) Emergency Act 1964, the Yang Di Pertuan Agong (King) gave the consent to approve the Essential Rules (Amendment) 2005) (Ikatan Relawan Rakyat) with effect from 1st February 2005.

This rule gave certain powers to RELA to try to tackle Illegal Immigrants, but they have been condemned for their ineptness, incompetence and thuggishness.

Apart from that they currently seem to be more like political tools for Barisan Nasionals; effectively BN's eyes and ears, snooping on the populous and reporting back to their BN / UMNO political masters!

Disbanding RELA will surely benefit all except the BN / UMNO.

Let all right thinking Malaysians join hands to say good bye RELA, a relic of bye gone days.

RELA, you are unimportant, you have over stayed your welcome, and your usefulness; therefore please go, be gone, sayonara, bye-bye, cheerio, farewell, goodbye, so long, see yah, adios, adieu. arriverderci, au revior, auf wiedersehen, smell you later, ttfn, adyos, ciao, tata, twáme naw, farvel, hino koh noh, kopiruba kawagu, vaarwel, beoð ge gesunde. oant sjen, mi yahee, mus zoo, slán go fóill, sugeng tindak, doi noh ko noh, 'aere ra, paalom na po, güle güle gidin, hwyl fawr, zayt gesunt, sala kahle & hundreds more farewells from our planet Earth.
